Thomas Jefferson School of Law

A nonprofit San Diego law school with residential and online JD options, graduate LLM study, legal clinics and specialized fellowships.

About Thomas Jefferson School of Law

Thomas Jefferson School of Law (TJSL) is a private nonprofit law school in downtown San Diego, with both residential and online Juris Doctor (JD) options and graduate Master of Laws (LLM) programs. It is a specialist institution rather than a broad university: students come here to prepare for legal practice, explore focused areas such as criminal law, intellectual property, sports and entertainment law, and gain experience through clinics, externships and fellowships. The most important point for applicants to understand is its licensing pathway. TJSL is accredited by the State Bar of California and WSCUC, but its JD program is not approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).

Degrees, format and legal practice experience

The JD is available in a residential program in San Diego and an online program for residents of California and a limited list of other states. Both require 85 units for students who began in Fall 2024 or later. TJSL describes full-time study as a three-year route and part-time as four years. Its graduate programs include an LLM in American Legal Studies and an LLM in Practice Skills. The school also highlights coursework and fellowships in criminal law, intellectual property, sports and entertainment law, along with clinics, externships, pro bono projects, moot court and trial advocacy. Applicants should review the residential JD curriculum and online JD program and state eligibility to check which format and courses fit their plans.

Main campus: 701 B St #110, San Diego, CA 92101; (619) 297-9700. The Student Affairs office at this address lists hours Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Those are office hours, not a promise that every service or classroom is open at those times; call ahead for an admissions visit. The school’s Student Affairs page lists its campus support services and contact details. TJSL also offers an online JD; it is a separate program with residency and licensing rules, not another physical campus.

Accreditation and bar eligibility: read this before applying

TJSL’s current accreditation page identifies the State Bar of California’s Committee of Bar Examiners and WSCUC as its accreditors. The ABA withdrew its approval in 2019. Graduates of the school’s California-accredited JD program may qualify to sit for the California Bar Examination, subject to the State Bar’s requirements. Study at or graduation from TJSL may not qualify a student to take a bar exam or obtain a law license in another jurisdiction. If you expect to practice outside California, contact that jurisdiction’s admissions authority before enrolling and confirm its rules in writing. The school’s accreditation disclosures and the State Bar’s legal-education requirements explain the distinction; the State Bar maintains the official California law school directory.

Tuition, scholarships and financial aid

For 2026–27, TJSL lists tuition of $1,350 per unit for both JD formats and $1,400 per unit for LLM study. At 85 units, the JD tuition rate currently works out to $114,750 before fees, books, living costs and future rate changes; this is a calculation from the published per-unit price, not a guaranteed degree total. Ask for a current cost-of-attendance budget and include housing, transportation and bar-preparation expenses when comparing schools.

JD applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships. The Dean’s Scholarship can cover full tuition for eligible first-time JD students with at least a 154 LSAT (or stated GRE equivalents); the Scholars Award can cover 50% of tuition at the listed LSAT/GRE thresholds. Both require a 2.7 cumulative GPA after each Fall and Spring term to renew. The Active Military & Veterans Opportunity Scholarship can cover 50% for qualified applicants who meet its test-score and undergraduate-GPA requirements and are eligible for specified VA benefits; it also has a 2.7 renewal GPA threshold. LLM applicants are automatically considered for limited scholarships of up to 50% based on transcripts and prior legal experience. These awards cover tuition according to their terms, not every cost of attendance. Review the current scholarship and aid requirements and tuition and cost budgets before relying on an award in your personal budget.

Applying and questions to settle early

JD applicants must have earned at least an associate degree from an accredited institution by the first day of classes and submit the required LSAT or GRE score for the program to which they apply. Online applicants must also meet the program’s residency rules. Applications are handled by the school’s admissions office; use its application page to confirm the current term, deadlines, required documents and program-specific testing rules. Before paying a deposit, ask how scholarships are renewed, what happens if your grades fall below the renewal threshold, how course schedules work for part-time students, and whether your intended state will accept this JD for bar eligibility.

What students say about the experience

Public student and graduate comments describe both supportive faculty access and serious concerns. Some reviewers praise individual attention, professors and academic support; others describe frustration with administrative communication and admissions processes. These are personal accounts rather than a reliable measure of every student’s experience, but they point to practical questions worth asking: who responds when a financial-aid or enrollment issue arises, how quickly the school answers student messages, and what bar-preparation support is included. Read the public graduate-school reviews and speak with current students if possible.
