High Tech High Graduate School of Education
A nonprofit graduate school in San Diego preparing teachers and education leaders through M.Ed. degrees, credential pathways, and school-based residencies.
About High Tech High Graduate School of Education
High Tech High Graduate School of Education (HTH GSE) is a nonprofit graduate school in San Diego for teachers and school leaders. It grew from a K–12 public-school network and centers its training on classroom practice, equity, project-based learning, and continuous improvement. The school is WSCUC-accredited; California’s Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approves specified programs leading to California teaching and administrative credentials. These approvals apply to particular degrees and credential pathways, so applicants should check that their intended program leads to the authorization they need.
Graduate degrees, credentials and field experience
Current pathways include the M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning with a preliminary teaching credential, the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership, the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership with a Preliminary Administrative Services Credential (PASC), and a standalone PASC route. The San Diego Teacher Residency combines graduate study and supervised classroom practice: residents work in an HTH K–12 school during the first year and continue teaching while completing the master’s program. HTH GSE describes more than 900 hours of first-year classroom experience. The leadership programs are designed for working educators and include a 10-month full-time or 20-month part-time option in some pathways. Review the degree and credential directory for current eligibility, schedule, and application details.
Clinical placements and residencies connect candidates with the High Tech High school network, which includes 16 K–12 schools. Those schools are practice sites, not separate HTH GSE campuses or branches. The graduate school’s current contact page gives 2150 Cushing Road as its location. WSCUC’s institutional directory still lists 2861 Womble Road as the institution’s main-campus address; both are in San Diego’s Point Loma area. Confirm the meeting or program location before traveling.
Tuition, grants and federal aid
For 2026–27, HTH GSE lists $15,000 tuition for the first, full-time residency year and $10,000 for the second, part-time year of its M.Ed. in Teaching and Learning pathway. Its 10-month full-time M.Ed. in Educational Leadership is listed at $20,000; the 20-month part-time option is $10,000 per year. The M.Ed. plus PASC pathway is $13,000 in year one and $10,000 in year two, while the credential-only PASC option is $9,000. The school separately estimates housing, food, transportation, and exam costs, so tuition alone is not the full budget.
Eligible San Diego Teacher Residency candidates may apply for a $35,000 living stipend, paid monthly during the residency year. The grant is limited and carries conditions, including completing the residency in an HTH school and a commitment to teach in a California public school for at least four of the following eight years. M.Ed. students may apply for federal aid through FAFSA (school code G42174), including Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Graduate PLUS Loans, and work-study; the non-degree PASC-only pathway is not eligible for federal student aid. These are not guaranteed awards. Review the current tuition and funding page and ask the financial-services team to calculate your full program cost and confirm grant obligations.
What graduate students report
The independent comments available describe practical learning and reflection on teaching, including strategies for supporting struggling readers. One recurring challenge is fitting program assignments around a full-time teaching job. A few comments also question the online experience and criticize the institution, so the feedback is mixed and too limited to establish a broad consensus. Ask current candidates how much weekly work their program requires, what coaching and advising look like, and how placements are arranged. The residency grant’s school-placement and service conditions are especially important to discuss before accepting an award.
