Adopt a Pet

Search adoptable pets

Adopt a Pet lets visitors search for dogs, cats and other animals using a location and adoption criteria. The site connects people with listings from shelters, rescue organizations and individual rehoming situations across the United States and Canada. Search filters and new-pet alerts help users discover animals that match their location and preferences; availability and adoption decisions remain with the shelter, rescue or caretaker.

Shelters, rescues and rehoming

The platform provides a shelter and rescue directory, news for animal-welfare organizations and an overview of rehoming a pet. Its resources explain how to get started, where to look and what to expect when considering an animal. Prospective adopters can review each listing and contact the responsible organization to learn about health records, behavior, requirements, fees and whether the pet is still available.

Adoption guidance and pet care

Adopt a Pet publishes an adoption guidebook, breed research, pet-behavior information, wellness articles and advice on protecting a pet. The guidebook includes a checklist and tips for speaking with shelters. These resources help people prepare for the process, but an individual animal's needs and health history should be discussed directly with the shelter or a veterinarian.

Fostering, volunteering and support

The site includes routes for fostering and volunteering, donation links for shelters and tools for people who want to share an adoption story. It also provides a help library, FAQs and a request-submission route for questions about using the platform. Adopt a Pet describes itself as a free adoption site and reports partnerships with more than 15,000 shelters and rescues.

Finding a responsible match

Adopt a Pet encourages users to explore animals and shelters and provides materials for preparing to adopt. The organization also links to pet-insurance advice and related resources. Adoption screening, fees, eligibility, transport and post-adoption support vary by shelter and animal; potential adopters should confirm all arrangements with the listed organization before agreeing to a placement.
