Mitchell College

A private nonprofit college in New London with associate and bachelor’s programs and individualized academic support.

About Mitchell College

Mitchell College is a private nonprofit college on the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. It offers associate and bachelor’s degrees, with a small-campus approach that emphasizes personal advising, hands-on learning and support for students with different learning styles. Its Mitchell Ability Model, Bentsen Learning Center and structured transition options are important parts of the experience. The college suits students who want close contact with faculty and a tailored support environment; compare the actual services and extra program fees with your needs before enrolling. The campus also offers traditional majors in business, health, science and social sciences.

Programs and student support

Among the main undergraduate choices are nursing (B.S.N.), marine and environmental science, health sciences, psychology, criminal justice, business management, sport management, digital communication, early childhood education, and applied exercise science. Transfer students can complete degrees in Professional Studies–Business or Health and Human Services. The college also announced a Master of Science in Management and Organizational Leadership beginning in January 2027. Its academic program directory lists current majors, minors and completion paths.

Support is a defining consideration here. The Bentsen Learning Center offers academic coaching and learning support; Thames at Mitchell is a college transition program for students with learning differences; and SAILS provides structured coaching and community activities for autistic students. These services may have separate charges and eligibility requirements. For 2026–27, Mitchell lists SAILS tiers from $4,500 to $8,600 per year, with additional coaching billed separately. Ask which services are included in your tuition, what is optional, and whether space is available. Mitchell’s learning-support approach can be valuable, but prospective students should compare the specific support plan, staff access and cost rather than relying on a general promise of individualized attention.

2026–27 costs and ways to pay

For a full-time student living on campus in 2026–27, Mitchell lists $39,970 in tuition, $16,890 for housing and food, and $3,130 in fees—$59,990 in these direct charges before any health-insurance cost, optional premium housing, books, travel or personal expenses. A one-time $500 breakage deposit is also listed for residents. Students with other qualifying insurance may waive the school’s health-insurance charge. Commuter and part-time costs differ, so use the current cost and financial-aid page to build the right estimate.

Eligible Connecticut residents may qualify for Mitchell Promise 2.0: a fixed $30,000 yearly cost for four years covering tuition, mandatory fees, campus housing and meals. The published eligibility rules include Connecticut residency, household income of $150,000 or less, a 3.0 high-school GPA, FAFSA completion and first-time, full-time enrollment in a bachelor’s program; renewal requires continuous full-time study and at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA. The school describes awards as limited, and its current intake timing should be confirmed with Admissions. Students may also be considered for merit scholarships through the admissions review, need-based Mitchell grants, Pell and FSEOG grants, work-study and federal loans. Complete the FAFSA by Mitchell’s stated February 1 priority date for first consideration, and ask for a written award showing grants separately from loans.

What student comments point to

Public comments are mixed. Some students describe supportive professors, helpful academic resources, small classes and a welcoming waterfront setting. Other reviewers criticize limited social activities, residence-hall or dining conditions, and inconsistent teaching or support. These are personal accounts and can vary by class, cohort and individual needs; they should be treated as prompts for questions, not as a verdict about every student’s experience. During a tour, ask to see the residence halls and dining spaces, meet the staff who would provide your academic support, and speak with a student in your intended major. The student review page lets applicants read the underlying comments.

Campus, contact and visiting

The main campus is at 437 Pequot Avenue, New London, CT 06320-4498. The college’s campus map identifies academic and administrative buildings, residence halls, the Bentsen Learning Center, student center, dining facilities, athletic fields, Mitchell Beach and the Thames at Mitchell program in Matteson Hall; these are all on the New London campus, not separate branches. The main phone is 860-701-5000. Google Maps currently labels the campus open 24 hours, but the college does not publish administrative office hours on its contact page; that listing may reflect campus access rather than office service. Call Admissions to confirm staff availability before visiting.

Admissions can be reached at 800-443-2811 or admissions@mitchell.edu. Schedule a tour or information session through the college’s campus visit page, where visitors can meet an admissions counselor and explore academic and residential spaces. Use the official application page to start an application, then confirm current program openings, financial-aid deadlines and support-service availability directly with the college. Mitchell College is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education; NECHE records its continued accreditation in September 2023 and next comprehensive evaluation in Spring 2033.
