About Tennessee Reconnect TCAT Grant

The Tennessee Reconnect TCAT Grant is designed for adults who want shorter, hands-on technical training at a Tennessee College of Applied Technology. It can help pay remaining tuition after federal and state aid, but “tuition-free” does not automatically include books, tools, uniforms or supplies. Before enrolling, ask the campus for the full certificate cost and your balance after aid, especially for programs with equipment or lab charges.

This pathway has its own rules and should not be confused with Tennessee Reconnect for associate degrees at community colleges. Applicants must be Tennessee residents, U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens, independent under FAFSA, not in student-loan default, and have submitted transcripts from prior institutions. They must enroll full-time at a TCAT in a certificate or diploma program and maintain continuous enrollment and satisfactory progress. Check the exact program and campus on the eligible list; being part of the TCAT system alone is not enough.

The institution handles the grant application: students do not submit a separate Tennessee Reconnect form for the TCAT route. The key steps are to apply to the TCAT and submit the FAFSA by the relevant trimester date: June 30 for summer, November 1 for fall and March 1 for spring. Then ask the campus financial-aid office whether the file is complete and what balance remains. These dates differ from the associate pathway, so copying a friend’s calendar can cost a term.

A useful sequence is to check the state TCAT directory, ask admissions about start dates and prerequisites, file the FAFSA, and request a calculation after Pell and other aid. Confirm whether the program requires uniforms, tools, a licensing exam, transport or unpaid clinical placements. Student discussions show that confusion often starts when people mix up TCAT and community-college Reconnect; use those accounts to prepare questions, but confirm eligibility and available funds with the office handling your file.

If you want an associate degree rather than a technical credential, the other Reconnect route may fit better: it requires at least six credits and has its own Success Plan and institution and degree list. For the TCAT pathway, the official site directs applicants to the campus financial-aid office, while the Tennessee Board of Regents directory helps locate technical colleges. TSAC lists 800-342-1663 for financial-aid help; save your FAFSA confirmation and request a written explanation of covered charges.

In brief

Reconnect pathway for FAFSA-independent adults enrolled full-time in a technical certificate or diploma; no separate Reconnect application is required, but books and supplies are not covered
