Midfield Institute of Cosmetology
Nonprofit cosmetology school with cosmetology and instructor training programs.
About Midfield Institute of Cosmetology
Midfield Institute of Cosmetology (MIC) is a small, nonprofit career school for people preparing to work in cosmetology or teach it. Its training is practical and license-oriented: students learn in classrooms, labs, and a student salon, then complete the state’s required licensing steps. MIC is a specialist school rather than a broad college, so the key questions for applicants are whether its schedule fits, what the full program will cost, and what credential and licensing process follow graduation.
Training programs and state licensure
The main Cosmetology program requires 1,500 clock hours. Its curriculum ranges from sanitation, safety, state laws, and anatomy to hairstyling, cutting, coloring, chemical texture services, skin care, makeup, nail care, and brow and lash services. Instruction includes lectures and demonstrations along with supervised practice and student salon work. MIC also lists two Cosmetology Instructor pathways: a 1,563-hour course for applicants with a cosmetology license and less than one year of salon experience, and a 650-hour course for those with a manager’s license or a cosmetology license plus at least one documented year of salon work.
Graduation requires completing the hours and coursework, passing written and practical finals, attending an exit interview, and settling the student account. A school diploma records completion of training; it is not itself an Alabama professional license. MIC says it reports program completion to the Alabama Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. Before enrolling, ask the school and the Board which exams, fees, and other steps apply to your specific route. The program page has the course outlines and instructor-track prerequisites.
Schedule, application, and cost
The published day-school schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with 30 hours per week. MIC also offers evening study, but its public page does not give the evening hours. The school’s tuition page says day classes generally start on the first Tuesday of the month and evening classes on the first Monday; confirm the next actual start date, attendance rules, and availability directly. Its admissions information asks for a high-school diploma or equivalent for the standard route, with an alternate training-agreement route described on the school page.
MIC publishes a total program cost of $15,550 for cosmetology, including tuition and listed fees, books, kit, and uniforms. That is the school’s posted figure and may change; request a current written cost sheet that includes any charges not covered by it. Applicants can use the school’s contact and inquiry form to request application details or arrange a tour.
Financial aid and accreditation questions
The school’s financial-aid materials list possible Title IV Pell Grant funding, GI Bill benefits, institutional scholarships, and out-of-pocket payment plans. Eligibility varies, and the presence of a funding option on a school page does not guarantee an award. MIC lists federal school code 042294; prospective students should complete the FAFSA only after confirming with the financial-aid office that the aid applies to the program and start date they are considering. Ask for a personalized aid offer and net-price estimate before signing an enrollment agreement. The financial-aid page also links to consumer information and a net-price calculator.
Alabama’s Board of Cosmetology lists MIC at its Midfield address under an active school license. MIC’s website also describes it as accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), but the public claim is dated and does not clearly state a current accreditation term. Students who need accredited-school status for aid, transfer, or another purpose should verify the school’s present standing directly with NACCAS and ask the school to explain how it affects their chosen program.
Campus and student salon
The sole location verified in the Alabama Board’s school listing is 26-B Phillips Drive, Midfield, AL 35228, inside Midfield Plaza. Call (205) 925-7600 or email midfieldinstituteofcosmetology@gmail.com before traveling; the school lists weekday day and evening instruction, while public-facing location hours can be shorter and may change. The address is in the Birmingham area, but the state regulator identifies the school’s city as Midfield. MIC also operates a student salon as part of practical instruction; ask which services are currently available, how appointments work, and whether students are accepting clients on the day you plan to visit.
What public comments suggest
Public comments describe contrasting experiences. Some students praise a welcoming atmosphere, instructors, and the director’s support, and others speak positively about the teamwork they saw during salon services. One recent reviewer, however, described a serious negative interaction with an instructor. Online comments cannot establish what every student will experience, but the difference makes a campus visit useful: ask to meet the instructor for your cohort, speak with current students if possible, and review the school’s process for raising concerns before committing.
