About Wisconsin Grant — UW, Technical and Tribal Colleges (HEAB)

Wisconsin Grant is a state need-based grant for Wisconsin residents enrolled in a degree or certificate program. The UW version serves University of Wisconsin System campuses; WG-TC is for Wisconsin Technical Colleges, and WG-TR is for Tribal Colleges. This profile covers the public and Tribal route. Students at a Wisconsin-based nonprofit private college should review the separate WG-PNP profile because its formula and funding differ. It is not a loan and generally does not have to be repaid when eligibility rules are met, but filing FAFSA does not guarantee an award.

The regular application is the FAFSA for the correct academic year. HEAB uses the Student Aid Index (SAI), calculated from student and parent information on FAFSA, to assess need; there is no separate Wisconsin Grant form. Applicants must be Wisconsin residents enrolled in an eligible undergraduate program and institution, at least part time. Even less-than-half-time enrollment may qualify, but the amount is reduced. Eligibility is limited to ten semesters. If residency, citizenship or a state debt creates a concern, ask the financial-aid office which specific rule applies before assuming FAFSA was rejected.

The 2026–27 ceilings differ by sector. HEAB lists annual maximums of $3,700 for UW, $1,752 for Technical Colleges and $2,450 for Tribal Colleges. The award is calculated from a student budget and SAI, then prorated by enrollment: 12 or more credits is full time; 9–11 is three-quarter time; 6–8 is half time; and five or fewer is less than half time. Certain $1,000 UW or $500 technical-college tiers apply only if funds are available. Do not build a personal budget around the maximum: the campus must confirm the actual amount and certified credit load.

Start by submitting FAFSA early and listing the correct UW, technical or Tribal institution. Then check the school’s aid portal and ask when it reviews Wisconsin Grant, whether verification documents are outstanding and what local priority date applies. HEAB does not publish a single student filing date separate from FAFSA on the program page. GLASS reported that 2026–27 WG-TC certifications had been awarded through October 2, 2026; that describes the certification processed by colleges, not a universal student deadline. For WG-UW, ask the campus for its award schedule and whether funding remains.

Public student comments help explain why an aid offer should be read line by line: some students discuss Pell and Wisconsin Grant covering tuition, while others separate those charges from housing, meals or transportation; questions about provisional offers and institutional appeals also come up. These are individual cases, not a promise or eligibility ruling. If the award is missing, ask the campus to verify FAFSA receipt, SAI, residency, program, certified load, remaining funds, annual amount and posting date. Request a net-cost breakdown for tuition, required fees, housing, food, books and transport before accepting loans.
