Southern California Institute of Architecture
An independent nonprofit architecture school in Los Angeles with undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programs.
About Southern California Institute of Architecture
The Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc) is a nonprofit, independent architecture school in Los Angeles’s Arts District. Its entire degree portfolio is focused on architecture and design, with a studio-centered approach and faculty made up largely of practicing architects. This is a strong fit for students who want architecture to be the center of their education and are ready for sustained project work, critiques and portfolio development. The program is demanding and costly, so compare the curriculum, total expenses and likely aid before committing.
Degrees and a studio-first education
SCI-Arc’s five-year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) is professionally accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. Students work across design studios, liberal arts, architectural history and theory, visual studies and applied studies. At the graduate level, the school has two NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture pathways: M.Arch 1 for students whose bachelor’s degree is outside the architecture background required for the shorter route, and M.Arch 2 for applicants with a qualifying architecture degree. SCI-Arc EDGE also offers postgraduate Master of Science programs in Architectural Intelligence, Fiction and Entertainment, Synthetic Landscapes, and Design Theory and Pedagogy. Portfolio and prerequisite requirements vary; use the current programs directory to compare each path before applying.
Costs and scholarships
For 2026–27, SCI-Arc lists tuition and mandatory semester fees of $30,305 for full-time students. Its estimated full student budget is $46,345 per semester, including housing, meals, materials, transportation and other expenses. Students normally attend two terms a year, and health insurance is required unless comparable coverage is approved for a waiver. The difference between tuition and the full budget matters in Los Angeles, where living costs can be substantial. Merit and need-based scholarships are available to entering and continuing students; the LAUSD full-tuition scholarship is limited to first-year B.Arch applicants graduating from an LAUSD high school and has renewal rules. Additional full-tuition awards have specific financial-need or applicant requirements, so check eligibility rather than counting on the headline award. Review the 2026–27 cost table and the school’s financial-aid and scholarship options to estimate your own net cost.

Visitors can park in assigned spaces near Santa Fe Avenue and Third Street and pick up a pass at the front desk; event parking uses a separate lot. Applications are reviewed for academic record, portfolio, personal statement, school profile and achievements. You can start an application or request admissions information and reserve a tour through the official site.
Student experience: creative intensity and financial trade-offs
Architecture students and visitors often praise the hands-on studios, experimental projects, access to working architects and the chance to build a distinctive portfolio. Graduate reviewers describe the work as intense and rewarding, and some appreciate direct faculty and financial-aid support. Other public comments question whether the high price is justified and raise concerns about career outcomes or the workload. Those differences make it especially useful to speak with students in the exact degree track you plan to enter, ask how often studio projects require late work, and review the school’s published student-achievement information alongside the scholarship offer.
