About Pennsylvania State Grant — Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA)

The Pennsylvania State Grant is need-based state aid administered by PHEAA. For 2026–27, the agency lists a maximum award of $6,000, but an individual amount depends on eligibility, financial need, institution, enrollment and available funding; living in Pennsylvania does not automatically produce that maximum. Families should compare the actual award in GrantUs with the campus bill rather than budget around the advertised cap.

FAFSA is required, but filing it may not finish the state application. First-time applicants must sign in to GrantUs and complete any extra steps or documents listed under “Action Items.” Most renewals do not need another application, although PHEAA may request updates. A status can change while the school verifies enrollment, credit load or other information. Keep confirmations and notices, but do not send sensitive financial details through ordinary email.

Deadlines vary by school type and applicant. Pennsylvania’s official campaign lists May 1 for first-time students entering four-year colleges and August 1 for students at two-year, business or technical schools. Late applications for terms other than summer may still be considered if funding remains; summer has a separate September 1 deadline. Check the year that matches your start date and confirm the precise deadline on the official program page before filing.

In a recent Penn State discussion, several students described their awards as “approved” or “anticipated” while waiting to see the funds on their campus accounts; others asked whether a remaining bill could incur late charges. These are accounts from one university, not proof of a statewide delay or a payment date for every campus. They do highlight an important distinction: approval in a portal, receipt by a college and posting to a student bill may be separate steps. If a payment deadline is near, ask the bursar in writing whether a pending award changes the due date and ask PHEAA whether anything is missing.

Start on PHEAA’s PA State Grant page, submit FAFSA and then use GrantUs to check eligibility, messages and outstanding tasks. The Pennsylvania Department of Education says the 2027–28 FAFSA is open; that does not mean every state form or award amount for the new cycle has been published. PHEAA answers student questions at 800-692-7392 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, and at granthelp@pheaa.org. The college aid office should confirm net cost, housing and meals, books and charges the grant will not cover.
