About Taylor Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) Opportunity Award — LOSFA
TOPS Opportunity is the entry-level merit award in Louisiana’s TOPS program for graduates enrolling at an eligible in-state institution. It is not need-based: the initial screen centers on the state core curriculum, TOPS GPA and an accepted test score. The standard route requires all 19 TOPS Core units, at least a 2.50 GPA in those courses and a minimum ACT composite of 20 or equivalent; the state can raise the test threshold to the prior year’s average. ACT superscores are not accepted, an important detail for students combining multiple test sittings.
Eligibility also depends on residency, citizenship and entry timing: the official page requires full-time first-time-freshman enrollment by the first semester after the first anniversary of high-school graduation. Public colleges, some approved private schools and technical pathways may have different award calculations; do not copy a yearly figure from one university to another. The standard award is tied to the TOPS amount set for each institution, while participating independent colleges use a weighted average. LOSFA’s individual award notice and the college bill are the right references for calculating your balance.
For 2026 graduates, the regular application must be received by July 1, 2027, before the first college year. The system allows a late period of up to 120 days, but it is not a free extension: filing 1–60 days late can cost one semester of eligibility, and 61–120 days late can cost two. Applicants may use the FAFSA or the TOPS Online Application depending on whether they seek other aid. FAFSA is the practical route for Pell, need-based aid, loans or work-study; LOSFA shows a separate online path when TOPS is the only requested aid.
Keeping the award requires tracking credits and grades, not just meeting the entry GPA. TOPS requires full-time continuous enrollment, at least 24 academic credits per year and renewal GPAs: 2.30 after the first year with 24–47 earned hours, then 2.50 after 48 hours; a 2.0 cumulative GPA also applies at certain semester checkpoints. A GPA suspension may be reversed if the student regains the minimum within the allowed period, but failing enrollment or credit requirements can cancel the award. Check TOPS Tracker in Student Hub and ask the high school to correct missing transcript or test data before relying on the funds.
Students have posted that TOPS appeared for fall but not spring or was slow to appear in LSU’s package. Those are institution-specific accounts, not proof of a statewide delay. If your award differs, compare the LOSFA notice, TOPS Tracker and your school’s verification status before paying or changing enrollment. Also compare GO Grant if you receive Pell and still have unmet need after other aid: that program depends on financial need and campus allocations, not academic merit. LOSFA lists 225-219-1012, 800-259-5626 and custserv@la.gov.
