About Maine State Grant Program — Finance Authority of Maine (FAME)
The Maine State Grant is different from the free community-college tuition scholarship. It is a need-based undergraduate grant for Maine students of different ages and may support study at public, private or technical colleges that administer federal aid. For 2026–27, FAME lists a maximum of $2,500 for eligible students; someone enrolled below full-time but at least half-time may be considered for up to $1,250. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a promised award for every applicant.
The current page sets a maximum Student Aid Index (SAI) of 10,000 for 2026–27. Students must be Maine residents, attend at least half-time toward an initial certificate, associate or bachelor’s degree, and enroll at an eligible institution. The grant is credited to the college account. Maine residents attending out of state generally cannot use it, with a possible exception through NEBHE’s Tuition Break regional program; ask FAME and the campus aid office before adding it to a budget. The SAI ceiling may change if available funding changes.
The form process is simple but annual: file FAFSA for every academic year, and that application also serves as the Maine State Grant application. No second form is required for the regular grant. The institution reviews enrollment and SAI, then includes any award in its aid offer. Do not automatically reuse an earlier cycle’s deadline for the next year; at the time of review, FAME publishes the 2026–27 maximum and FAFSA route, so verify the current calendar and remaining funds before assuming a late or retroactive payment is possible.
The real cost of a degree depends on several line items. Students discussing Maine’s free tuition program online point out that “no tuition” does not eliminate housing, food, transport, materials or special fees; some also ask whether low-cost community-college courses will transfer. Those comments help surface practical questions, but they are not an official cost estimate or a guarantee of credit transfer. Request a written summary of cost of attendance, federal and state grants, institutional scholarships and net balance; confirm each course with the receiving institution before transferring.
FAME administers the program and offers free one-to-one guidance. Its office is at 5 Community Drive, Augusta, Maine 04330; for FAFSA and education aid call 800-228-3734 and choose option 4. Published walk-in hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.; appointments are available 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. The official grant application runs through FAFSA and the college financial-aid office. Bring your SAI, credit load, institution and budget so the answer addresses your situation rather than only the advertised maximum.
For Maine residents with demonstrated need and a maximum 2026–27 SAI of 10,000; up to $2,500 full-time or up to $1,250 at half-time
