About Soka University of America
Soka University of America (SUA) is a small, nonprofit liberal arts university in Aliso Viejo, California. Its undergraduate program is deliberately built around one Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts, with five concentrations rather than a long list of separate degrees. That structure, small seminars and a semester of study abroad included in standard tuition make Soka distinctive; it also means applicants should check whether its broad interdisciplinary approach matches the professional or graduate-school prerequisites they have in mind. The experience is residential and internationally oriented, with students from dozens of countries sharing classes and campus life.
What you study—and how the degree works
Undergraduates choose from Environmental Studies, Humanities, International Studies, Life Sciences, or Social and Behavioral Sciences. The program combines general education, language study, intensive January Learning Clusters and a year-long senior capstone. Every undergraduate also completes a semester abroad, which the university says is covered by standard tuition; students choose from destinations tied to Chinese, French, Japanese or Spanish study. This gives students room to explore more than one discipline, while those preparing for fields with strict prerequisites should map required courses early with faculty advisers. SUA also offers a graduate M.A. in Educational Leadership and Societal Change. The undergraduate study guide lays out the concentrations and required sequence.
Tuition, financial aid and the Opportunity Plan
For 2026–27, Soka lists undergraduate tuition of $38,486. Its on-campus cost-of-attendance budget totals $63,674 when living costs, books, transportation, personal expenses and estimated health insurance are included; the insurance charge may be waived for students with qualifying coverage. These estimates are not all direct charges, so compare your own aid offer with both the billable costs and the full budget. Soka automatically considers admitted undergraduates for a merit scholarship, and additional need-based grants may be available. Its updated Soka Opportunity Plan takes effect in 2027–28: eligible undergraduates from families earning up to $200,000 will receive at least full tuition coverage, with partial tuition guarantees for some families earning up to $300,000. Those future tiers should not be read as the 2026–27 guarantee. Use the university’s Opportunity Plan details and cost-of-attendance table to check the rules for your entry year and request a personalized estimate.
Campus, location and visits
Main campus: 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656; general telephone (949) 480-4000. The Admissions and Financial Aid offices list weekday hours of 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; campus tours are scheduled separately. Soka’s hillside campus is a few miles from the coast, but it is not in the middle of a large downtown, and the nearest bus stop is about 1.5 miles away. Students who do not have a car should plan trips to nearby cities and beaches around local transit and shuttle options. Prospective students can reserve a guided campus tour before traveling; the admissions portal also accepts applications through the Soka application or Common App.
Student life: close community, quieter pace
Student and alumni reviews often value small classes, direct access to professors, campus facilities and an internationally mixed student body. The same small scale can feel quiet: some students describe a limited party scene, fewer spontaneous off-campus options and a campus routine that depends on living alongside classmates. Reviews also question the number of required courses and whether students can fit every prerequisite they want into the curriculum. Ask a department adviser to review your intended graduate or career path, and ask current students about food, transportation, student organizations and the day-to-day residential experience. A wider range of student perspectives appears in Soka University of America reviews.
