About Thimble Cottages

Romantic cottage stays for two in Youlgreave

Thimble Cottages manages two holiday properties for couples in the village of Youlgreave, described as lying in the heart of England within the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire. Both cottages are presented as well equipped, well maintained and comfortable, and are positioned close to local facilities. The offer is built around romantic breaks for two, with four-poster beds, wood-burners and leather sofas among the features highlighted.

The two cottages

The properties are neighbouring, which the owners note makes them suitable for friends or family travelling together who prefer the privacy of separate houses. Each has its own character and fittings.

Thimble Cottage

A traditional stone cottage for two with a wood-burner, underfloor heating, Egyptian cotton bedlinen, monogrammed towelling robes and a secluded rear courtyard garden. Its bathroom and kitchen were refurbished in February 2018. It does not have a dishwasher, but a small freezer was fitted instead.

Tweedle Dee Cottage

A cottage for two with a hand-carved four-poster bed, Egyptian cotton bedlinen, an en-suite bathroom with bath and shower, monogrammed towelling robes and a secluded rear walled garden. A new kitchen and bathroom were installed in 2019.

Equipment and house rules

  • Complimentary WiFi in all cottages; mobile signal is described as intermittent for most networks, with a signal achievable on the parking land opposite Tweedle Dee and at the back of Thimble.
  • Wood-burners at both Thimble and Tweedle Dee. No initial supply of logs is provided.
  • Showers as well as baths in all cottages, plus hairdryers, irons and ironing boards; hair straighteners at Tweedle Dee and Thimble.
  • Microwave in all cottages; dishwasher in all except Thimble Cottage.
  • One private off-street parking space per cottage.
  • Well-behaved pets and babies are welcome, but pets are not allowed upstairs. Children are not accepted for insurance reasons, only babes in arms; the stairs are described as steep in all cottages.
  • No welcome packs are currently offered because the owners do not live locally.

Youlgreave and the surrounding area

The village is described as one of the largest in the Peak District, with three pubs that serve food: The George, opposite the church, known for fine ale and takeaway fish and chips; The Bull's Head at Fountain Square, offering pub food; and The Farmyard, with a bar and a first-floor restaurant. A village shop with tea rooms, a Post Office and general store, and Peak Feast — selling cakes, pies, coffees, teas and hot chocolate — are all within about a minute's walk. Bakewell, three miles away, is presented as the place for a wider range of shops and restaurants.

Walks and cycle rides start from the doorstep and guests may bring their own bikes. A riding school operates in the next village a few miles away, and Carsington Water offers watersports tuition and hire. Route details for walks to Over Haddon and Monyash, including circular options, are kept in each cottage.

The village's annual Well Dressing takes place directly outside Thimble Cottage; the scenes are made from flower petals laid on clay-covered boards soaked in the local river and last about a week.
