About Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress
Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress: chemical-free bedding made in Devon
Cottonsafe® Natural Mattress is a family-run British business that designs and hand-makes mattresses, beds, sofas and bedding from natural and organic materials. The company presents itself as a pioneer in chemical-free, sustainable mattresses, stating that it developed the first entirely fire-safe mattress without the use of any chemicals. Production is carried out by hand at its workshop in Devon.
The range is built around a chemical-free and vegan philosophy applied, according to the company, at every stage of the manufacturing lifecycle. Its Cottonsafe® fabric is described as 100% natural, 100% biodegradable and 100% sustainable, and the materials used are selected to be either biodegradable or recyclable.
Mattresses by construction and size
The mattress catalogue is organised by style and by measurement. By construction, the shop lists natural sprung mattresses, vegan sprung mattresses and non-sprung models, alongside Futomats in Japanese style. Sizes cover single, long single, small double, double, king, super king, euro king and zip and link.
Supporting guides accompany the range, including a mattress buying guide, a size guide, a firmness guide and a care guide, plus an explanation of whether a protector is needed. The site also addresses the use of polyester in mattresses and offers MCS and allergy sampling.
Beds, headboards and bases
Beyond mattresses, the company sells beds under the names The Lustleigh, The Dittisham and The Clovelly, with matching headboards in the same three models. Bed bases are offered as The Classic and The Regency, and beds can be chosen in single, double and king sizes. Bed fabrics can be ordered as swatches.
Sofas, futons and children's lines
The sofa collection is divided into eco sofas (The Budleigh and The Dartmouth) and vegan sofas (The Vegan Budleigh and The Vegan Dartmouth), available as an armchair, medium sofa or large sofa. The site announced a new chemical-free natural and vegan sofa line at the time of writing.
Futon mattresses come in single and two-seat tri-fold versions and three-seat bi-fold versions, with standard, Flexi-Pocket, loose cover, pocket sprung, Cocoloc and TradLux variants, plus separate futon loose covers and Futomats. For children and babies, the catalogue includes an organic wool cot and cot bed mattress, a vegan cot and cot bed option, an organic wool children's mattress, a vegan children's mattress and a Tween Appledore model, together with vegan choice children's bedding, protectors and duvets.
Toppers, bedding and protectors
Toppers are split between natural models (The Cotton and the British Wool Topper) and vegan models (The Vegan and The Pocket Vegan). The bedding section covers pillows — Cottonsafe® Hollowfibre, Cottonsafe® Feather, Vegan Hollowfibre and British Wool — as well as the Cloud Duvet, Kids Cloud Duvet, Wool Duvet, mattress protectors and duvet protectors. A clearance section and a range of care guides for toppers and futons complete the offer.
Showroom and buying process
The company invites customers to try the full range at its showroom on the Woodbury Business Park in Woodbury, near Exeter. Fabric samples can be ordered and online consultations are offered as an alternative to an in-person visit. The site also refers to a 40 Night Reassurance Guarantee, alongside delivery, returns and terms and conditions information.
Reviews are collected through Trustpilot, whose mark appears on the site; the material reviewed did not specify a score or number of reviews.
