About PT Academy

PT Academy: fitness education built around active personal trainers

PT Academy is a UK-based fitness education company founded in 2009. Its founding premise was that learners should be taught and mentored by working personal trainers and fitness professionals, and it introduced a nationwide mentor-based system on that basis. The organisation describes itself as the largest and fastest-growing fitness education company in the UK and as the UK's leading fitness and personal training course provider, claims attributed to its own presentation.

Its offer centres on Ofqual-regulated qualifications at Levels 2, 3 and 4, complemented by CPD courses, enhanced practical courses and assessment days. Delivery is designed to be flexible: learners can choose face-to-face learning, fully online study or a combination of both, and the academy states that assessment and learning pathways exist for non-gym environments as well.

Personal training qualifications and levels

The Level 2 qualifications are Ofqual-regulated and cover the knowledge and skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective sessions. They are recognised by CIMSPA and the Fitness Register and provide entry onto the Register of Exercise Professionals at Level 2, with contexts including gym, exercise to music, water-based exercise and physical activity for children.

At Level 3, the academy offers the Level 3 Personal Training qualification and the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Personal Training, both Ofqual-regulated. These prepare learners to work with individuals and groups in a personal training setting, whether employed or self-employed, and provide access to the Register of Exercise Professionals (EREPS) at Level 3. A Level 3 Exercise and GP Referral qualification is also available, recognised by CIMSPA and the Fitness Register.

Level 4 options include Lower Back Pain Management, Nutrition and Obesity and Diabetes, Advanced Personal Training, and Strength and Conditioning. Each is Ofqual-regulated at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework and, subject to EREPS entry requirements, allows access to Level 4 on EREPS.

Course bundles and diplomas

PT Academy structures part of its catalogue around bundled diplomas. The Gold Diploma combines Level 2 and Level 3 study with a one-to-one expert mentor. The Platinum Plus Diploma adds two additional Level 4 qualifications, and the Super Platinum Plus Diploma expands the number of Level 4 qualifications further. The Classic Diploma is described as the flagship course, while the Diamond Diploma is taught by the CEO and the head of the delivery team. The Master Personal Trainer Diploma is offered only by contacting the academy directly.

The site also listed a bundle of 15 courses for £1,500, presented as an October offer, and a Premier Diploma for which full and partial funding may be available. Prices shown at the time of writing ranged from £1,399 for the Classic Diploma to £4,499 for the Diamond Diploma, with several courses marked as reduced from higher reference prices. A deposit secures a place, after which the enrolment team finalises start dates and payment plans. The academy advertises 0% interest payment plans and a price-match guarantee under which it will beat a competitor's price by 20%.

Assessment, mentoring and study methods

The academy states that it was the first education company to use active trainers as mentors, assessors and tutors. It also describes itself as the first training provider in the UK to develop pathways allowing assessments to be completed from any location. Learners can select face-to-face, online or blended study, and the organisation says it can tailor courses to individual needs.

Gym partnerships and employment access

PT Academy reports partnerships with most major health club chains in the UK, naming David Lloyd, The Gym Group, Pure Gym, Bannantynes, Xercise 4 Less, Virgin Active and Nuffield Health among others. It states that this creates thousands of potential sites for graduates and that learners are not limited to a single chain. The academy also says it is partnered with a large UK fitness jobsite providing VIP access to more than 45,000 active jobs, and it mentions job interviews upon completion of courses.

Additional courses and public programmes

Beyond its core qualifications, PT Academy is approved to deliver a range of assessing and quality assurance awards, including the Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment, the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement, the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, and several Level 4 awards and certificates in internal and external quality assurance. It also lists ELCAS and Ministry of Defence provisions among its pathways.
