About Next Generation Upholstery

Next Generation Upholstery: bespoke furniture and reupholstery from a Swindon studio

Next Generation Upholstery is a family-run upholstery business operating from a studio in Swindon and serving customers throughout the Cotswolds. The workshop is led by Andras Barna, a certified craftsman whose stated approach is that quality lies in the detail, with each stitch, nail and pleat positioned with care.

Two core lines of work

The studio divides its activity into two areas. The first is bespoke furniture, covering individually made pieces. The second is reupholstery, which restores existing furniture rather than replacing it; one customer account describes a thirty-year-old sofa being reupholstered instead of being sent to landfill.

  • Bespoke furniture: made-to-order upholstered pieces.
  • Reupholstery: renovation of sofas, suites and chairs, including advice on cushion fillings and help choosing fabrics.

Andras Barna's training and background

Barna began his upholstery career in 1994, spending three years training under master upholsterers at a technical college, and achieved full certification in 1997. He then worked in a small workshop alongside a master upholsterer, developing modern and traditional techniques, hand stitching and deep-buttoning. He later moved into the automobile industry to learn car trimming, refining precise sewing and pattern making. In 2003 he started his first upholstery business, and in 2016 he moved to England to learn British upholstery techniques; Next Generation Upholstery was founded not long afterwards.
