About Maybury Guitars

Hand-built electric guitars and basses from Surrey

Maybury Guitars is a boutique workshop that produces hand-built custom electric guitars and basses in Surrey, England. The instruments take their cues from the designs of the 1950s and 1960s, combined with what the workshop describes as a distinct modern twist. Each build is presented as a one-off piece shaped around the player who commissions it.

The luthier behind the brand is named Jason, and the site frames each commission as a partnership between the customer's ideas and his experience as a builder. The workshop's stated aim is a bespoke instrument that is, in its own phrase, "made to play".

How a commission is built

Orders are handled as personalised commissions rather than off-the-shelf sales. According to the site, the customer takes part in decisions across the specification, including:

  • Selection of tone woods
  • Hardware and pickups
  • Finishes
  • Body styles
  • Scale lengths

The workshop presents this range of choices as the core of the process, combining choice, precision and customisation. Customers who want a custom build are directed to make contact through the site's contact form or by email to discuss the request.

Guitar models in the catalogue

The guitar range is organised into several named lines. The Upscaler appears as an S-type model, and the catalogue also lists the Fish Hook, Saguaro, Double Cut, Cholla and an Offset model, alongside a section for other guitars. These names identify the different body shapes and designs offered within the custom programme.

Bass models and the Arthur Wilson signature run

On the bass side, the workshop lists the Meloca Bass, the Chuck Bass and the X Bass. The X Bass is the basis of a limited signature edition developed with Arthur Wilson of Bones Ate Arfa, following a custom X Bass built for him in June 2025.

The collaboration produced a run of five X Basses designed as a more accessible version that keeps the look, feel and tone of the original. Each of the five shares the same finish and body shape, premium electronics and the Kent Armstrong Claymore Soapbar pickup used for Wilson's signature sound. The basses are produced to order on a first-come, first-served basis.

Wilson described the original as an instrument that "hits hard, feels fast, and cuts through without losing weight", and said the signature run comes close to it. The workshop, for its part, noted that Wilson brought a clear sonic vision and a deep understanding of his instrument, and that working with him pushed the team creatively.

Materials, hardware and pickups

The site devotes separate sections to hardware, pickups and tone woods, reflecting the components that go into each commission. The Kent Armstrong Claymore Soapbar is the one pickup model named explicitly, in the context of the Arthur Wilson signature bass.

Artists, demos and reviews

Maybury Guitars maintains pages for artists, demos and reviews and articles, including a customer reviews section. The site names Jared Clayton, lead guitarist for Delirium, as a new Maybury artist, and references a review of the X Bass by the YouTube creator Jonny Dibble.

Two customer testimonials are reproduced on the site with five-star ratings. One buyer of an S-type Upscaler describes the process from the first email enquiry to delivery, mentioning input into the build and regular photo updates of the progress. A second customer, writing about a bass, highlights responsive communication, build quality and design discussions. The site also refers to a five-star Trustpilot review and displays a Trustpilot reference.

Buying and enquiries

Instruments are sold through commission rather than a standard stock list, and the site includes a For Sale section. Enquiries about custom builds are handled through the contact form or by email, and the workshop states that it processes the personal data submitted through that form in compliance with the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.
