Company background

The company traces its history to 1948, when Norman Stanley (Mechanical Handling) was founded by Norman and Ruby Stanley in a family home in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Its first product was the Hydratruck, a 500kg hand hydraulic press tool handler that went on to sell 1,000 units. Robert Stanley joined the business in 1960, when headcount reached four and annual turnover stood at £32,000. In 1965 the company acquired the ROBUR range of hand pallet trucks from WC Youngman of Crawley, manufactured by Kentruck of Sweden, and in 1967 it was appointed exclusive UK distributor for Kentruck, selling battery lifting and propelled stackers and pallet trucks under the ROBUR brand. After operating from rented premises in St Albans, it bought a site in Guildford Road in 1968.
