The British Functional Fitness Federation (BF3) is the UK's not-for-profit national governing body for competitive functional fitness, regulating the sport and selecting Team UK for international competition.

About British Functional Fitness Federation

The British Functional Fitness Federation and competitive functional fitness in the UK

The British Functional Fitness Federation (BF3) presents itself as the UK's National Governing Body (NGB) for functional fitness. It is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2016 and formerly known as FRF UK (Fitness Racing Federation UK), a name the federation states remains its legal trading name. Its stated role is to provide governance and regulate the sport in the UK, representing and protecting the interests of all stakeholders in the competitive functional fitness community.

According to the federation, it is actively seeking recognition for functional fitness as a sport in the UK with Sport England. Its stated mission is to obtain recognition from the Sports Councils of the Home Nations that competitive functional fitness is a sport, and to seek public funding for the implementation of its Whole Sport Plan.

International affiliation and anti-doping

BF3 describes itself as an active member of iF3, the International Functional Fitness Federation, which it identifies as the sole world governing body for the sport. The federation notes that iF3 is seeking membership from Sport Accord to enable recognition by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and that it is an active member of The Association For International Sport For All (TAFISA), an IOC-recognised organisation. It also states that iF3 is in conversations with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about the application process for becoming a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

BF3 also expresses support for iF3's pursuit of a place in the Olympic programme at Brisbane 2032.

Team UK and the competition calendar

The federation selects Team UK, and its published calendar covers national and international events. The site lists BF3 National Championships editions for 2018, 2019, 2020–2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, alongside international events including iF3 Worlds 2019, iF3 Worlds 2020–2022, iF3 Worlds 2023, iF3 Super Worlds 2024 and the iF3 European Championships 2025.

The IF3 World Championships 2026 for juniors, individuals and teams is announced for the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Glasgow. The site also references a Team UK online qualifier with registration, workouts and a scorecard, as well as spectator tickets and volunteer registration for events.

Membership, education and sport documentation

BF3 sets out several membership routes: individual membership, affiliate membership, and school and college affiliation. It also runs an education strand with a BF3 Level 1 Award and a BF3 Level 2 Award.

For those new to the discipline, the site publishes explanatory material on what functional fitness is, the sport format, sport divisions, movements, the rulebook, and strategies and mental challenge.

Merchandise and communication

The federation operates an official BF3 Store offering supporter merchandise, team apparel and branded clothing, with proceeds presented as support for the growth of functional fitness across the UK and for athletes representing Great Britain. The site also links to The Defiant Co. shop.

BF3 publishes news items on its own channel, including pieces on the BASE Show, the 2025 iF3 European Championships, safeguarding, team kit, a statement on athlete ineligibility due to an anti-doping violation, and the 2024 iF3 World Championships. It maintains a newsletter and states that subscriptions are GDPR-compliant and that data is not shared.

Governance and safeguarding

Alongside its regulatory role, BF3 addresses safeguarding as part of its work, presenting it as a means of creating a safer sport and community. The federation also publishes a statement on athlete ineligibility following an anti-doping violation, indicating that eligibility matters fall within its published communications.
