About Yorkshire Crisps

Hand-cooked crisps and popcorn from Wales Bar, near Sheffield

Yorkshire Crisps is a snack producer based at Units 1-4 Waleswood Industrial Estate in Wales Bar, a village between Sheffield and Rotherham. The company was founded in 2005 by businessman and part-time farmer Ashley Turner and describes itself as a small, dedicated team built around its Yorkshire roots. Its output is two product lines: luxury hand-cooked potato crisps and Yorkshire Popcorn.

How the crisps are made

The potatoes are grown by local farmers on the chalky soils of the Yorkshire Wolds and are selected before cooking. They are hand cooked in hot, pure sunflower oil for a few minutes and then sprinkled with 100% natural flavouring while still warm. The company states that its products contain no monosodium glutamate preservatives, no genetically modified ingredients and no artificial colourings or flavours, a contrast it draws with mass-produced brands. Packaging is sourced from Yorkshire suppliers, part of a stated aim to buy ingredients and packaging from local producers.

Flavour ranges

  • Crisps: a range of 12 flavours, presented as suitable for different members of the family.
  • Popcorn: four flavours, covering both sweet and savoury preferences, made from corn the company describes as the world's finest and seasoned with natural flavourings.

Formats and online sales

The online shop delivers crisps and popcorn directly, with pre-selected flavour combinations as well as a build-a-box feature for choosing individual flavours. Crisps come in resealable stay-fresh drums or classic bags, the latter in 40g individual and 150g sharing sizes.

Where the products are sold

Beyond the online shop, Yorkshire Crisps supplies farm shops, delis, coffee shops, sandwich bars, public houses, wine bars, theatres and many independent retailers, and is also available in some larger multiple retail stores in the Yorkshire region. The company names several larger customers: John Lewis food halls, Hotel du Vin and Malmaison Hotels, and the West End theatres associated with Andrew Lloyd Webber together with the Delfont Mackintosh, Nimax and Ambassador theatre groups. Hamper manufacturers supplied include Spicers of Hythe, Simply Thank You, Highland Fayre, Virginia Heywood, Regency Hampers, Tordoff Wines and Gifts and Hampers.com.

Exports and awards

Alongside sales in a number of European countries, the company exports worldwide, citing Uruguay, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates among its markets. Its stated awards include Best Snack at the Caterer and Hotelkeeper Awards for Excellence and Gold Great Taste Awards.
