Hackworthy & Sons

Hackworthy & Sons: removals and storage from Plymouth across the South West

Hackworthy & Sons is a family-run removals company headquartered in Plymouth, Devon. The company states that it has carried out local, national and international removals for private and business clients for more than 40 years, and describes itself as one of the largest independent furniture removals companies in Devon and Cornwall. Its service area covers Plymouth, Launceston and the South Hams, with moves extending across Devon (including Exeter) and all of Cornwall.

The company presents itself as a 'Which? Trusted Trader' and states that it was the first in the South West to achieve the British Standard in Domestic Removals. It also reports a Trustpilot rating and cites customer reviews on its site; these are the company's own presentation of its reputation.

Household removals and packing

The core domestic service covers transporting belongings between homes, with the option of a full packing service in which the crew packs up the house. The company also offers a packing-materials supply for customers who prefer to handle packing themselves. Related services listed for household moves include insurance and waivers, storage, and retail distribution.

The site sets out a step-by-step removals process and addresses small moves as a distinct category, alongside guidance on insurance and waivers. It also publishes a moving guide, FAQs and advice on disposing of unwanted items.

Specialist items: art, antiques and pianos

Among the local services, Hackworthy & Sons lists a dedicated line for art, antiques and pianos, aimed at customers moving valuable or delicate pieces. This sits alongside the general household removals offering rather than as a separate business.

International and overseas moving

The company states that it has spent over 40 years offering international removals and that each year it export-wraps and packs thousands of cubic feet of customers' belongings for shipment around the world. It describes a range of transit options intended to match different budgets and requirements, from airfreighting a few boxes of personal effects to Sydney, Australia, to shipping belongings in a 40ft container to a new home in Vancouver, Canada.

International services named on the site include groupage, dedicated containers, baggage airfreight and packing for a move abroad. The company also publishes a moving-abroad checklist and guidance on moving pets abroad. Destination pages cover moves to Europe, the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. According to the site, trained surveyors and crews advise on the most appropriate shipping method, on preparing personal effects for transit and on documentation.

Business and commercial relocations

For commercial clients, Hackworthy & Sons offers a business removals service in Plymouth intended to keep disruption to a minimum. The company reports experience with large office relocations, factories and university laboratories, including porterage for internal moves. It also offers flexible scheduling with out-of-hours and weekend moves, and support from staff during the planning and implementation of a relocation. Related commercial services listed are crate hire, relocation management tips and storage.

Storage and additional services

Storage is offered as a service in its own right, both for household moves and as part of the commercial offering. The wider service list also includes insurance and waivers, packing services and retail distribution.

How quotes and surveys are handled

The company provides several routes to a quotation: a quick quote, a full quote, an online survey and a booked home survey, plus a video survey option. Customers can also log in to the company's 'Move Man' system. The site states that the business operates from its Plymouth headquarters and runs additional operations in Torquay and Truro.
