About Flat Cats
Flat Cats: Window Protection Screens for Cat Safety
Flat Cats is a British company that designs and sells window protection screens intended to prevent cats from falling from open windows. The product consists of a specially sized, easy-to-fit strong PVC-coated mesh that covers the window opening. According to the company, the screens can be fitted in seconds without drilling into window frames, and they allow air to circulate while keeping cats safely indoors. An added benefit is that the mesh also provides insect protection.
The company states that over 200,000 Flat Cats have been sold since 2008, describing itself as the longest established and most trusted brand on the market. This claim is presented as the company's own positioning.
Product Range and Customisation
Flat Cats offers several product lines to suit different window types and sizes:
- Standard Flat Cats: Available in sixty sizes, with a choice of grey or white mesh. Packs contain from 1 to 10 screens.
- Custom Flat Cats: Made-to-measure screens, also available in grey or white mesh, ordered online.
- Small Custom Flat Cats: Designed for openings where the sum of width and height is up to 135 cm, with grey or white mesh options.
- Door Screens: Suitable for balcony, patio, or interior doors, available in grey or white mesh.
The company provides a sizing chart to help customers choose the correct screen dimensions, and orders can be placed online in about five minutes.
Origin and Development
Flat Cats was invented by Dominic Parker, who explains that the idea arose from his own concern about his cats falling from open upstairs windows. While working from a home office in South London, he needed to open windows for ventilation but was worried about his cats walking out onto the window ledge. After trying various materials, including plastic garden mesh and PVC-coated wire mesh, he found that effective solutions required drilling into UPVC window frames, which he wanted to avoid. It took three years and many prototypes to develop the final product. The first Flat Cat cost around £75 in materials alone. In 2005, while living in a second-floor flat with large south-facing windows, Parker used a Flat Cat and found it effective for both cooling and cat safety.
