Valli Opticians: independent eye and hearing care rooted in Yorkshire

Valli Opticians began in 2005 as an independent optician's practice set up by local optometrist Moin Valli and his wife Rachel. The group has expanded since then into multiple practices across the Yorkshire and North West region and beyond, and now combines optometry with audiology services. The company presents itself as a family business that employs locally and frames its work around community involvement.

Eye care and eyewear

The core service is the eye examination, supported by a range of eyewear options: glasses, lenses and tailored optics, and sunglasses. The group also runs a Vision Eyewear Brand Directory and a Buyers Guide, and offers an interest-free payment plan for eyewear. A separate Valli VIP Plan covers vision care.

Contact lenses and myopia control

Hearing care

Children's eye care and school screening

Children's services include eye tests, children's glasses, treatment for short-sightedness, support for visual stress and dyslexia, children's contact lenses and school vision screening. The group's 'Seeing Red' campaign promotes children's vision screening in schools. A Children's Eye Care Week was advertised for 26–29 October at the University Valli Opticians branch, with free NHS eye tests for children, activities about how we see, testing equipment and a range of frames.

Corporate eye tests

Valli offers a corporate eye testing service aimed at employers, presented as a way to look after employees' eye health while limiting downtime and administrative paperwork. The company also runs Co-Optic care, visiting local businesses that require eye care services.

Contact lens recycling

Six months after launch, Valli Opticians described itself as the first in the country to offer contact lens recycling. Used contact lenses, top foil and blister packs are collected in specialist Zero Waste Boxes from recycling company TerraCycle at practices across Yorkshire, Merseyside, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Hull. The scheme is open to everyone, not only patients, and the group reported receiving posted waste from people as far away as Devon. Solution bottles and cardboard packaging are not accepted in the boxes. Full boxes are returned to TerraCycle, which separates and recycles the materials into products such as durable outdoor furniture.

Community initiatives and recognition

The Valli Rally is an annual countryside trek that raises money for Outlookers and encourages people to gather, get active and connect. The company states it is actively involved in initiatives for local schools, businesses and charities. Its site cites 15 awards, a 98% client happiness score for eye tests and 97% for glasses, and refers to feedback collected through Google Reviews across all Valli branches.
