Art Smart

Art education for all ages at Art Smart in Newark-on-Trent

Art Smart is an art education studio based at 33-35 Cartergate in Newark, Nottinghamshire. It runs classes, courses and workshops in drawing, painting and making, with separate programmes for adults, children, teenagers and families. The studio is led by Lynn Adams, who describes herself as a professional artist, illustrator and teacher with long experience across primary, secondary, alternative provision and adult education.

The teaching space is described as a new studio with capacity for up to 14 students, a size chosen so that each participant receives individual attention while the group can still exchange ideas.

Courses grouped by age and audience

The programme is organised into four strands:

• Adults: drawing, painting and creating, designed for participants from 14 to 114.
• Children: courses and workshops for ages 6 to 12, with an emphasis on making and enjoyment, plus the opportunity to complete Arts Awards.
• Teens: workshops and courses for ages 10 to 16 that combine skill development with fun, including weekly GCSE support groups and the chance to complete Arts Awards.
• Family: fun workshops in which younger children take part alongside a parent or carer who helps with the fiddly parts.

Beyond these strands, the site lists an adult art club with fortnightly classes, children's art clubs, after-school sessions and adult classes, as well as a journaling course and a Junior Art Club.

Arts Award accreditation

Lynn Adams is a trained Arts Award advisor, and the studio can offer courses leading to the Discover, Explore, Bronze and Silver Awards. This accreditation route appears both in the children's and the teens' provision.

Weekly timetable and weekend options

The schedule shown on the site includes Wednesday evening and Thursday evening sessions from 6.30 to 8.30, alongside weekend daytime and weekday daytime slots. The studio also states that it is open to suggestions about which courses to offer.
