About Angus Council
Angus Council: local authority services across Angus
Angus Council is the local authority for the county of Angus. Its stated vision is for Angus to be a good place to live, work and visit, and it frames its work around partnership with other organisations and communities to shape more integrated, responsive and sustainable services.
The council describes its operating context as one of reducing budgets and increasing demand, and states that it can no longer act as the sole provider of a very broad range of services. It says it questions the purpose of what it does rather than only the delivery method, so that activity is directed at its core public-service role.
Strategic priorities
The council sets out four outcome-focused priorities:
- Making Angus a go-to place for business.
- Maximising inclusion and reducing inequalities.
- Supporting communities that are strong, resilient and led by citizens.
- Making Angus Council efficient and effective.
It states that it works with local, regional and national partners to improve quality of life, with particular attention to vulnerable people and families, and that it aims to invest for economic growth while delivering efficiencies and reducing the environmental impact of its actions.
Services for residents and businesses
The council's service directory covers benefits and money advice; bins, litter and recycling; council, committees and elections; Council Tax; housing; jobs, employment and training; planning and building; roads, parking and travel; and schools and young people. It also lists births, deaths and ceremonies, business support, communities and people, the environment, leisure, tourism and the outdoors, licences and permits, noise, neighbours, pets and pests, and social care and health.
Frequently used functions highlighted on the site include checking bin collection days, making payments, reporting issues, submitting requests and applications, finding a home through Angus HomeFinder, and checking school holidays.
Contact channels and access support
The council asks that its contact centre telephone line be used only for emergencies, requests for support for a vulnerable person, or cases where an online enquiry cannot be submitted; other enquiries are directed to an online form. During busy periods a callback option is offered instead of waiting on hold, although it is not available for calls made after 4pm, and a reference number is issued for follow-up. Payments made by phone are transferred to an automated system.
Outside office hours, the contact centre line carries a recorded message with emergency numbers. This applies after 5pm Monday to Friday, before 8:45am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, before 10am on Wednesday, and at weekends and on public holidays.
Access support is also described. The ACCESS service in libraries assists people unable to use digital or phone channels with Blue Badge applications, housing applications and bus passes. For deaf and hard of hearing users, Relay UK is available on 18001 followed by the contact centre number, and the site refers to the British Sign Language interpreting service for public authorities at contactSCOTLAND. Alternative formats such as large print, audio or Braille can be provided, and a telephone interpretation service and information in other community languages are offered.
Headquarters and news
The council's headquarters are based at Angus House, and the site directs readers to a separate page for all council office locations and addresses. The newsroom has covered items including a Summer of Sport 2026 programme, funding to support families through the Whole Family Wellbeing Fund, a new recycling initiative in Montrose, and autumn holiday free school meal direct payments. The site also points to current consultations through Engage Angus and to an e-news subscription service.
