About Winchcombe Farm
A family-run glamping retreat beneath Edgehill in Warwickshire
Winchcombe Farm is a small, independent holiday retreat run by Jo and Steve on a private country estate in the Warwickshire countryside, at the north-east tip of the Cotswolds. The site sits within a working farm below Edgehill, the battlefield landmark, and describes itself as lying in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The accommodation is a collection of six self-catering lodges, presented as a luxury offering with hot tubs, hammocks and geodesic domes for stargazing. Ponies and alpacas graze in a paddock on the grounds.
The six holiday homes and their capacities
Each lodge has its own name and a stated maximum occupancy, several of them allowing an additional infant in a cot:
- Ben's Burrow — sleeps 9, plus one infant in a cot.
- George's Getaway — sleeps 6 adults and 2 children, plus one infant in a cot.
- Will's Tree House — sleeps 4.
- Bob's Lodge — sleeps 8, plus one infant in a cot.
- Chicken Shed Lodge — sleeps 5, plus one infant in a cot.
- Jess' Tree Bach — sleeps 4, plus one infant in a cot.
The site presents Will's Tree House as the only treehouse accommodation in Warwickshire, positioned as a romantic stay.
From cattle barn and nursery to holiday lodges
The property was bought by Jo and Steve at the turn of the century, and a former cattle barn was converted into the family home where they live with their sons, Will and Bob. The adjacent hay store became a children's day nursery, which closed in 2017 after the introduction of 30 hours' free childcare made it financially unviable. The empty buildings prompted the couple to open their first lodge, The Chicken Shed, in 2018, described on the site as initially "a bit of an experiment". Bob's Lodge followed in May 2018 and was later featured in the Sunday Times. A tree house on site, previously used as a forest classroom, was converted into the third lodge. George's Getaway opened in December 2019 in the nursery's former baby room, and Ben's Burrow, the former preschool, opened in summer 2020 after a conversion carried out during the first lockdown. Jess' Tree Bach, the former nursery "bug shed", was converted during the second lockdown in 2021. Apart from the Chicken Shed, the lodges are named after Steve's five children: Jess, George, Ben, Will and Bob.
Stays for couples, groups and wedding parties
Beyond standard bookings, the site lists a set of special-stay categories: gift vouchers, a private chef, stays with friends, group bookings, romantic stays, accommodation for Primrose Hill wedding guests, and dining delivered to the door. It also publishes a site layout plan and a section of holiday extras.
Exploring Tysoe and the northern Cotswolds
The retreat is presented as a base for visiting Stratford-upon-Avon and the nearby Cotswold villages. Its local information covers the parish of Tysoe, local attractions, amenities, places to eat and walks close by. The site notes that Tysoe appears in the 1086 Domesday Book as "Tiheshoche", a name linked to the Anglo-Saxon god Tiw, and that the parish lies nine miles north-west of Banbury in the Stratford-upon-Avon district, made up of Upper, Middle and Lower Tysoe. It also describes the Red Horse Vale, named for a horse figure cut into the red clay escarpment of Edgehill, recorded from 1607 and last covered over in 1914; the early 18th-century Tysoe Windmill, a twelve-sided stone tower that operated until struck by lightning in 1915; and the 11th-century church dedicated to St Mary. Tysoe is described as having thatched cottages of local Cotswold stone and local amenities including a post office, village stores, a pub and a tea room.
Guest experience as presented by the retreat
The owners state that they have hosted thousands of guests from around the world since opening and emphasise a personal approach with small touches, alongside what they describe as a high number of positive reviews and repeat bookings. The site also carries a media and blog section, including a reference to the programme Celebs Go Dating.
