About The Krishnamurti Centre

A retreat and study centre in the South Downs National Park

The Krishnamurti Centre is a residential centre in the Hampshire countryside, within the South Downs National Park, dedicated to inquiry into life in light of the teachings of J. Krishnamurti. It presents itself as a place of no authority where nothing is imposed, and it welcomes guests for group retreats, individual stays and day visits. Outside the scheduled group retreats there is no guidance or structured activity: guests may use the library, sitting room, video room and quiet room, walk in the grounds and surrounding countryside, and inquire informally with others.

Retreat formats and programme

The Centre's group retreats are built around dialogue and inquiry, complemented by a selection of Krishnamurti audio, video and texts, so that attention can be given to a particular aspect of the teachings and its implications in daily life. The programme listed on the site includes several recurring formats:

  • Group Retreats, generally running four to five days
  • Silent Retreats, mostly two to three days
  • Weekend Retreats
  • Young Adults Retreats
  • The Krishnamurti Gathering, a five-day event held in August

The calendar published on the site runs from June 2026 to December 2027, with dates such as a Group Retreat on 26–30 June 2026, the Krishnamurti Gathering on 14–19 August 2026, a Silent Retreat on 4–6 September 2026 and a Young Adults Retreat on 11–15 September 2026. Some entries carried availability notes at the time of writing, including a Group Retreat on 23–27 October 2026 marked with three places left, and Silent Retreats on 30 October–1 November 2026 and 6–8 November 2026 marked as waiting list. At all other times, and usually during these programmes, the Centre remains open for individual retreats and day visits.

Accommodation and meals

The Centre has 20 guest rooms and 4 flats, all single en-suite, simply but comfortably furnished and with views over the grounds. Booking a standard or large room can be done online or by phone. All meals provided are vegetarian, and vegan and gluten-free options can be made available on request. Stays are full-board.

A building designed by Keith Critchlow

The building was created by the professor of architecture Keith Critchlow and is described as having a timeless feel, from the proportions of the guest rooms to the expansive sitting and dining rooms. Light enters from multiple directions, and the design is presented as combining austerity and comfort. Krishnamurti did not live to see the centre completed, but he was involved in its design and features: he helped choose the materials and took a particular interest in the location and setting of the quiet room.

Brockwood Park and its surroundings

The Krishnamurti Foundation Trust purchased Brockwood Park in 1969, choosing it for a peaceful yet accessible location in the Hampshire countryside. Brockwood Park brings together three elements: Brockwood Park School, a boarding school for teenage students from around the world; the Krishnamurti Centre itself, for adults studying Krishnamurti's work; and the Foundation, which preserves and makes the teachings available internationally. Staff, volunteers and students live on site.

Within the grounds, The Grove is described as a highlight of Brockwood Park for many, including Krishnamurti. Situated in the west of the grounds, it contains mature sequoias, oaks, chestnuts and conifers, a rare handkerchief tree, rhododendrons and azaleas, and in spring and early summer the ground is carpeted with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells. Brockwood Park lies close to the South Downs Way, which runs from Winchester to Eastbourne, and is within reach of Winchester and the market towns of Alresford, Petersfield and Alton, as well as the south coast.

Krishnamurti and the Foundation

The site presents Krishnamurti as a thinker and religious teacher who did not expound a philosophy or religion but spoke about everyday concerns: living in modern society with its violence and corruption, the individual's search for security and happiness, and the need to free oneself from fear, anger, hurt and sorrow. For almost sixty years until his death in 1986, he travelled around the world talking about the need for radical change. The Krishnamurti Foundation Trust is the body behind Brockwood Park and the Centre, and the site also provides access to a biography, core teachings, books, quotes, audio and video, key topics and archived articles.
