About Ellgia
Ellgia: waste management, skip hire and recycling across East Anglia
Ellgia is an independent waste and recycling management company operating from a network of permitted sites in Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire. It serves businesses, trade customers and homeowners across East Anglia, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire, and describes its offer as built around zero waste to landfill.
The company was founded by Steve Crook in 2011 with a single customer, one vehicle and a service office in Cambridge. According to its own account, it now runs more than 60 HGV vehicles from over four permitted locations, employs more than 160 local people and serves over 4,000 customers. The name Ellgia combines the names of the founder's daughters, Ella and Georgia, and the company presents itself as retaining a family-run approach despite its growth.
Skip hire for clear-outs and trade jobs
Ellgia offers skip hire to businesses, trade and homeowners, with an online booking system for selecting the container. The range spans from 3-yard to 16-yard skips, with delivery and collection and availability at short notice. The service is aimed both at site work and at domestic clear-outs.
Commercial waste collection and container types
For commercial customers, the company provides collection services using several vehicle and container formats depending on the need: roll-on containers, euro and wheelie bins, rear-end loaders (REL) and front-end loaders (FEL). It states that it can build a bespoke collection schedule for each customer, supported by a modern fleet with reporting capabilities.
The materials handled include general waste, dry mixed recycling, cardboard, food, glass and plastics, security shredding, hazardous waste and WEEE waste (waste electrical and electronic equipment). Commercial bag services and food and organic waste collections are also listed.
Sectors served
Ellgia works with waste producers across a broad set of sectors: office, hospitality, leisure, agriculture, retail, schools, logistics, automotive, defence, construction, printing, manufacturing and healthcare, as well as homeowners. Alongside collections, it provides waste minimisation and recycling advice, waste audits and multi-site service solutions.
Processing, fuel production and the zero-landfill approach
The company operates permitted transfer stations and processing facilities with capacity for over 35,000 tonnes per annum of waste and recycling materials across four permitted locations. Residual waste is directed to its own waste-to-fuel production, yielding Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) used to produce heat and power. Ellgia frames its services around the waste hierarchy, from the smallest disposal requirement to complex multi-site contracts.
Awards and recognition
Ellgia reports external recognition for its customer service and investment. In 2018 it received the Independent Operator of the Year award at the MRW National Recycling Awards. In 2019 it cites the North Lincolnshire Business Investment Award at the Hull and Humber Chamber of Commerce Awards and the Large Business of the Year award at the Lincolnshire Business Awards, linked to local employment and supply chain support.
