About Steepletone UK LTD

Steepletone UK: British audio heritage since 1972

Steepletone is a family-owned British brand that has been designing and selling audio equipment and retro-style electronics for more than five decades. Founded by Tony Tyler in 1972, the company began by selling radios and record players from the boot of a car and later moved into a converted cinema in Oxfordshire known as Cinema House, where a production team of over 80 workers built British-made record players. The business remains in the hands of the Tyler family, now spanning three generations, and states that it has sold over five million products.

Product range: music centres, turntables and retro electronics

The catalogue is organised into several families of products, most of them with a vintage or retro aesthetic combined with modern features.

  • Music centres: all-in-one systems that play vinyl, cassette tapes, CDs, FM radio and MP3 files via USB or SD card. The Phoenix High Power 6 in 1 model is presented as the only music centre on the market with a triple CD changer and 12.5 watts per speaker. Other named models include the Boston and Houston music centres.
  • Record players: turntables marketed under the brand's British record player heritage, including the Camden two-speed record player.
  • Radios: classic-style radios with modern sound, including the AFR1 Angle Fish Shower Radio, which reached 500,000 sales by 2002 and returned in 2024 with FM and Bluetooth.
  • Jukeboxes: iconic jukebox designs for home use.
  • Speakers: Bluetooth models such as the Sonic Party, the Ibiza high-power speaker with disco lights, and Bluetooth table speakers.
  • Tech gifts and gadgets: a selection of novelty and practical electronics, including a 3-in-1 charger and the Glow Plus beauty light mirror with speaker.
  • Lighting: light bulbs and fittings, including the TEXT LED light bulb range.
  • Vinyl storage: storage solutions and personalised cases for record collections.

From British manufacturing to a global stockist network

The company's history traces several distinct phases. In the late 1970s it expanded its range with new British-made audio equipment alongside imported radios from Hong Kong. By the early 1980s it had added cassette recorders, in-car entertainment systems and headphones, and its products were stocked by retailers including Woolworths, Littlewoods and Tesco. The late 1980s and early 1990s saw a move into electronic toys, karaoke machines, "My First Turntable" sets for young vinyl enthusiasts, novelty alarm clocks and jukeboxes. In 2000 the brand introduced its sound waves logo, and by 2010 it was supplying more than 1,000 stockists worldwide, with products such as the Street Machine boombox and the TEXT LED bulb range. The company marked its 50th anniversary in 2022.
