About O2 Recycle

O2 Recycle: trade-in service for phones, tablets and other tech

O2 Recycle is a service that allows owners of unused phones, tablets, laptops, consoles and other gadgets to trade them in for cash or credit. The programme is run in partnership with Likewize, which the site describes as a leading expert, and is operated by Likewize Services UK Limited. The service accepts a broad range of device types and brands, and the site states that it has already saved more than 4 million devices from becoming e-waste.

Device categories and accepted models

The trade-in catalogue covers phones, tablets, laptops, consoles, watches and earbuds. Popular brands listed for trade-in include Apple, Samsung, Google, Oppo, Doro, HMD, Honor, Huawei, LG, Motorola, Nintendo, Nothing, OnePlus, Sony, Xbox and Xiaomi. The site provides specific eligibility guidance: most iPhones are accepted, including Plus, Pro and Pro Max variants going as far back as the iPhone 7; Samsung Galaxy S series devices are accepted as far back as the S8, and A series devices as far back as the A8, including Flip and Fold variants; Google Pixel and Pixel Fold devices are accepted as far back as the Pixel 3. Users can check whether a specific model qualifies by entering its details in the search bar on the O2 Recycle website.

Condition, valuation and quote validity

O2 Recycle accepts devices with cracks, scratches and even major faults, although the site notes that condition affects trade-in value. After a device is received, it is checked over; if the model or condition differs from what was declared and changes the value, a revised offer is sent by email. If the customer is not happy with the new offer, the device is returned free of charge. Quotes are locked in for 7 days, and devices arriving after that period are re-evaluated based on the latest prices.

How the trade-in process works

The process is set out in five steps: choose the device, get an instant quote and confirm it, prepare the device, post it, and receive payment after the device is received and wiped. Preparation instructions include backing up and deleting data, removing security locks such as iCloud and Google, disabling PIN codes, charging the battery, and omitting chargers and cables for phones, tablets and watches. For laptops and consoles, essential accessories such as controllers, docking stations and power cables should be included. The site offers three sending options: using own packaging with a QR code at a Post Office or printing a free postage label from the confirmation email; requesting a free recycling kit; or dropping the device at a local O2 store, where a team member arranges its return. The free postage label includes insurance cover up to £150, and the site suggests upgrading shipping with Royal Mail or another courier for high-value devices. A quote reference must be clearly visible to ensure quick processing and payment.

Data security and device afterlife

On arrival, all personal data is wiped before any further handling. Devices that can be reused are resold by O2 Recycle as Like New or through its partner Likewize. Devices that cannot be reused are sent to partner Relove Technology, where valuable materials are extracted and repurposed. The site states that nothing goes to waste and that all devices are refurbished or recycled responsibly.

Payment, tracking and support

Customers receive an email when their device arrives and can track it using the Royal Mail tracking number on their proof of postage, or by logging into their O2 Recycle account and selecting ‘Track my order’. Payment is expected within 3–5 working days; if it has not arrived, the site advises checking emails first and then contacting support through the contact page. Support is also available for packaging queries and other issues via the online contact form or in O2 stores.

Environmental and social initiatives

O2 Recycle frames its service as a way to reduce e-waste and keep technology in circulation. The site states that over 4 million devices have been kept out of landfill through the programme. It also highlights a partnership with Good Things Foundation, described as the UK’s leading digital inclusion charity, aimed at tackling data poverty. Customers can choose to donate a portion of their recycle value to support this work, and if a new valuation is accepted, the donation is adjusted as a percentage in line with the revised amount.

Buying refurbished devices

In addition to trade-ins, the site notes that Like New devices can be purchased through o2.co.uk or at O2 stores.
