About Hayter Limited
Hayter Limited: British lawn mower design and manufacturing since 1946
Hayter Limited is a British manufacturer of lawn mowers headquartered in Spellbrook, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. The company states that it has been designing and producing premium quality lawn mowers at that site since 1946, and that it marks 80 years of British engineering and innovation. It operates as part of Toro U.K. Limited, the entity under which it is registered in England.
Its catalogue is organised around petrol lawn mowers, battery lawn mowers and cordless electric lawn mowers, alongside a line of accessories that includes Hayter clothing. A separate professional range covers commercial battery mowers, commercial petrol mowers, commercial accessories and power tools, and the site also offers Toro power tools. The company presents these products as aimed at DIY users, gardeners and professionals.
From a cottage workshop to rear roller mowers
The company traces its origin to founder Douglas Hayter, an engineer who had previously serviced aeroplane engines and owned a building company. According to the account published by Hayter, he conceived the rotary lawn mower after seeing a 100-year-old horse-drawn rotary mower at the London Science Museum. Back in Spellbrook, he built a frame by hand from spare pieces and fitted it with a second-hand two-stroke engine; the first Hayter rotary lawn mower, with a dustbin lid over the rotor, was completed the following day. Hayter was incorporated as a limited company in 1946.
Demand grew after a neighbour asked for a mower of his own. In 1947 the Hayter Motor Scythe entered full production as a hand-propelled motor mower with a 24-inch cut, and Ipswich Town Council was among the first customers. Later developments included a safety stone guard on the mower deck and a four-stroke engine with horizontal crankshaft once resources became more available towards the end of the decade.
Royal Warrant and the Harrier range
In 1960 Hayter received a Royal Warrant for the supply of horticultural equipment to Her Majesty the Queen at the Sandringham Estate. The company states that it continues to supply lawn mowers to the British Royal estate. It also describes itself as the UK's largest and most respected manufacturer of rear roller lawn mowers, a claim attributed to its own presentation, and links its mowers to the striped finish it calls Hayter Stripes.
The company specifies that only the Hayter Harrier lawn mower range is manufactured in Britain, a qualification it repeats alongside its product information.
Parts, support and dealer network
Beyond complete machines, Hayter offers Hayter-approved spare parts intended to last through the lifecycle of its mowers. Its support section includes warranty registration, a spare parts enquiry channel, a manual finder, a brochure request form and customer support. The site also provides a dealer locator for finding authorised Hayter dealers and a route for businesses interested in becoming a dealer.
Enquiries are channelled through an online form with categories for new product sales, spare parts and accessories, and after-sales, as well as subjects such as existing order queries, product or technical queries, product reviews, spare parts and marketing.
