Valley Contractors: bagged topsoil, turf and aggregates from Birmingham

Valley Contractors is a supplier of bagged topsoil, bark, turf and aggregates based in Birmingham, West Midlands. The company presents itself as the UK's number one topsoil specialist and sells to wholesale, trade and public customers in small bags and bulk bags. Its catalogue covers five grades of topsoil, alongside lawn turf, organic fertilisers, playground and landscaping bark, decorative gravels, slate and chippings, sand, hard core, road stone and rock salt.

Topsoil range and specifications

The topsoil selection includes several screened products with stated technical characteristics. Prime arable soil is screened to 20mm, has a pH range of 6.5 to 7.2 and a medium loam texture, and is positioned for general landscaping, level bases and foundation layers. Vegetable mix topsoil is also screened to 20mm, with a pH range of 6.2 to 6.8 and a medium loam texture, aimed at leafy greens, fruiting vegetables, raised beds and kitchen gardens. High quality planting topsoil meets BS3882, has a pH range of 6.5 to 7.0, organic matter of 18-22% and a medium loam texture, and is intended for trees, shrubs, flower beds and long-term planting areas.

Two further products combine topsoil with well-rotted horse manure. A 750-litre bulk bag of pre-mixed topsoil and manure is presented for beds, borders, vegetable plots, raised beds and turf under-lay, while a separate 850-litre bulk bag of rotted horse manure is described as seed-free and suitable for vegetable plots, allotments, mulching around roses, shrubs and young trees, and general soil improvement.

Turf, bark and decorative aggregates

Garden lawn turf is supplied in rolls of one square metre, with a premium seed composition and the claim that it can be laid at any time of year. It is marketed for rapid rooting, high-traffic areas and professional landscaping projects, with a starting price of £5 per roll. The bark range covers playground and landscaping bark, and the site notes that bark chippings can act as a natural weed barrier, protect plant roots, retain soil moisture and serve as a surface for paths and play areas. Decorative gravels, slate and chippings are also part of the catalogue, together with sand, hard core and road stone.
