Maskay guide

How can you use ZipRecruiter and decide who can see your résumé?

A guide to searching ZipRecruiter listings, distinguishing an application from résumé visibility and checking what information you share with recruiters and employers.

A job platform can put an opening in front of a candidate within minutes, but a résumé is not always limited to the application you have just submitted. ZipRecruiter lets people apply to listings and, if they switch on the relevant option, share a profile in its résumé database so employers and recruiters can find them. That distinction deserves attention before you upload a file containing a phone number, home address or other personal details.

Start at ZipRecruiter.com or its official app, create a job seeker account and complete a professional profile with relevant experience and skills. When you apply, read the final screen: under the company’s current privacy policy, “Apply Now” lets you choose the résumé saved to your account or upload another one; “1-Click Apply” automatically sends the file attached to your account. Check the selected document, employer and job title before confirming, and keep the application email or receipt.

Searching for work and making your résumé visible are separate choices. ZipRecruiter explains that, if you enable its résumé database, it may make certain identity and contact details available to employers, recruiters or their representatives. You can switch off that availability in “My Profile” in your account. The company also warns that someone who accessed and saved your information before you changed the setting may keep that copy; turning off the option does not automatically erase files already downloaded by others.

Use your profile to show what is needed for the job: experience, education, relevant licences and a contact method you check. Do not put your Social Security number, bank details, passwords or identity documents in a résumé that may be visible. If a recruiter contacts you, confirm the vacancy on the employer’s careers page and reach the company through a channel you find independently. The Federal Trade Commission warns about fake offers that imitate familiar companies and then ask for money, check deposits or sensitive information.

If you no longer want to appear in searches, open “My Profile” and change the résumé-database preference, then check that the change has saved. For an application already submitted, remember that your information is shared with the employer and possibly its external applicant-tracking system, as the official policy describes. If anyone asks you to pay to get the job or return part of a cheque, stop communicating and report it to the FTC. ZipRecruiter can help connect candidates and employers, but it does not guarantee a hire or make every listing a verified offer.

Bottom line

Confirm each step on the official website and keep a record of your applications.
