Maskay guide

Which museum should you visit in Nice on a rainy day: Matisse or Villa Masséna?

Matisse’s art in Cimiez and Riviera history near the sea offer indoor visits with different journeys and admission fees.

A rainy day in Nice: Matisse in Cimiez or history at Villa Masséna

Rain in Nice need not mean watching the sea from a window. Two municipal museums tell different stories and require different journeys. Musée Matisse focuses on one artist from the hilltop Cimiez district; Villa Masséna brings Riviera history close to the seafront. The best choice depends on cultural interest and where the day begins.

Matisse: travel to Cimiez for a collection

At 164 avenue des Arènes de Cimiez, Musée Matisse holds around 600 works and 138 objects connected with the artist, according to the city. Exhibitions rotate, so check what is on view for your date. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April through October and to 5 p.m. November through March. Standard admission listed on October 1, 2026, was €12. The museum lists reduced-mobility access and climate-controlled rooms, but allow for travel from the center. On a wet day, the journey is part of the plan.

Villa Masséna: Riviera history inside a period home

At 65 rue de France, Villa Masséna occupies a residence near the Promenade des Anglais. Furniture, objects and documents trace Nice’s transformation from its incorporation into France in 1860 through the Belle Époque. The building gives that history a setting rather than merely a sequence of cases. It opens 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May through October and from 11 a.m. November through April. Standard admission in the same check was €10. Its position makes it easier to combine with central streets or the seafront.

Both museums close on Tuesdays, a decisive point when improvising a rainy-day plan. Both allow free entry to eligible groups with proof and list adapted access. If Matisse’s work is the main draw, the trip to Cimiez makes sense; for the city’s history with a shorter journey, Villa Masséna may fit better.
