The two conical chimneys of Sintra National Palace mark the town centre even when mist hides part of the hills. The monument’s operator places the palace in the historic centre and estimates ten to fifteen minutes between it and the station; it also notes restrictions on private vehicles in the centre. That short walk can become a small lesson in Portuguese pastry. Flaky travesseiros and cheese-based queijadas are different sweets, and they need not be bought as interchangeable souvenirs.
Casa Piriquita I Sintra stands at 1 Rua das Padarias, close to the palace. The business says it began as a bakery in 1862 and that a later generation created its egg-and-almond cream travesseiro. Its counter also offers queijadas and other pastries. Reviews express enthusiasm for the flaky texture, but also describe queues, crowds and travellers who find the filling too sweet. Identify branch I when reading addresses and hours: Piriquita II and the Lisbon shops are different locations and their ratings must not be mixed with this one.
Fábrica das Verdadeiras Queijadas da Sapa lies at 12 Volta do Duche, on the way to the station. Portugal’s Comércio com História register recognises its connection to Sintra’s pastry tradition. The queijada has a cheese-and-cinnamon centre beneath a thin shell: a different texture and size of sweet. Visitors praise the pastry and the feel of a small café, while noting the limited seating and occasional variation in service. Directories list Monday closure, although we did not find an updated site belonging to the shop that would make that schedule definitive.
A sensible sequence is to see the National Palace rooms and kitchens first, step into Piriquita I if the travesseiro appeals, and then follow Volta do Duche for a queijada before the train. The two shops explain the difference better than a ranking of supposedly “best pastries”: a family shop’s cream-filled flaky pastry and a small cheese tart from another tradition. Buy one of each before deciding what to take away. If departure is near, put the train time first and remember that a queue can consume much of a fifteen-minute walk.
Sintra National Palace offers several ways to visit, and its official site publishes opening times, last admission and access conditions. Check them before adding attractions in the hills. On an unhurried day, this pastry route connects royal kitchens, town streets and a living local practice. On a tight visit, choose one stop for the pastry you actually want, rather than the photograph repeated most often online.
Try Piriquita I’s travesseiro near the palace and Sapa’s queijada on the walk to the station; allow for queues and check the train time.
