Maskay guide

Where can you try yuba in Nikko after visiting Tōshōgū Shrine?

Two restaurants serve Nikko yuba in full set meals near the city’s shrine-and-temple complex.

A visit to Tōshōgū Shrine often fills the morning in Nikko: carved animals, ceremonial gates and richly decorated halls make it more than a quick stop. After leaving the grounds, a yuba meal carries the local story to the table. Yuba, the delicate skin that forms when soy milk is heated, became part of Buddhist cooking and a regional speciality. Nikko Yubayūzen and Yuba-gozen Sun Field offer two different ways to sit down and try it.

Yubayūzen is in Yasukawachō, about ten minutes by bus from the stations and five minutes on foot from the stop. Its set meals bring several yuba textures together at an unhurried pace; the dining room looks onto greenery that changes with the season. Lunch is listed from 11:30 to 15:00, while ingredients last, and the restaurant closes Wednesdays. Arriving late may limit the choices, so leave the shrine before the busiest part of midday and head there.

Sun Field occupies a smaller building in Shimohatsuishimachi, closer to central Nikko and Tōbu-Nikkō Station. Its set meal lets diners compare several small preparations—soft and firmer yuba, including sashimi—with rice and soup. Reviews praise the variety and family-style service, while also mentioning queues at busy times and the usefulness of carrying cash. Listings do not fully agree about weekly closing days, so confirm service before walking down from the temples.

The better choice depends on your route. Travellers who want a scenic setting and a longer lunch may prefer Yubayūzen; those heading back towards the station who want many preparations in a small dining room can consider Sun Field. In either case, the meal adds context to the heritage walk: it does not replace Tōshōgū, but shows how a Buddhist vegetarian tradition became part of everyday Nikko cooking.

Leave time for the bus and possible queues. Tōshōgū’s hours vary by season, and final admission is before closing, so check the official schedule for your date. Shimohatsuishimachi is convenient for returning to the station if you are travelling onward that afternoon. Yuba is best enjoyed without rushing, one preparation at a time, after a morning spent among the shrine’s architecture and details.

Bottom line

After Tōshōgū, yuba makes a local meal with context; choose according to your preferred location and lunch pace.
