Maskay guide

Where can you try matcha in Uji after visiting Byodoin?

A tea café and a municipal tea house offer two different pauses beside Uji’s heritage.

Across the pond at Byodoin, the Phoenix Hall appears to float on the water, making tangible an eleventh-century vision of the Buddhist Pure Land. The visit need not end at the gate: Uji is one of the historic names of Japanese tea, and a few steps away you can choose a matcha dessert or a slower introduction to tea ceremony. Nakamura Tokichi Byodoin Store serves tea and sweets in a café format; Taihoan, the municipal tea house opposite the temple, offers a guided cultural experience.

The Nakamura Tokichi branch at 5-1 Uji Renge combines a tea shop with a self-service café. Matcha parfaits, drinks and sweets make an immediate reward after the pond and Hoshokan Museum; tea leaves are also available to take home. Official hours are 10:00–17:00, with café last orders at 16:30 and irregular closing days. Customers praise the strong flavour and riverside setting, although popularity brings queues and can make the ordering process less clear.

Taihoan changes the pace. The municipal tea house stands at 2 Ujitogawa, by Byodoin’s south entrance, and its sukiya-style architecture includes tatami and table rooms. The tourism association describes several Uji tea and seasonal-sweet options, along with a tea-ceremony session that requires booking. Official materials ask visitors to reserve that experience at least three days ahead. If you arrive without a plan, ask whether basic tea service is available that day, but do not count on joining a ceremony at short notice.

Order matters too. Byodoin’s garden is open 8:45 to 17:30, with last admission at 17:15; entry to the Phoenix Hall interior is assigned in timed sessions and may sell out earlier. For matcha along the shopping route, Nakamura Tokichi lies between the temple and Keihan Uji Station. Taihoan is opposite and works better as a booked activity than an improvised café stop. The tea room inside the temple has its own closing schedule, so do not confuse it with these two places outside the grounds.

Choose Nakamura Tokichi for flavour and a generous dessert, allowing time for a queue. Reserve Taihoan if you want to understand the gestures and context, and check conditions and closure days in advance. Both pair well with a walk over Uji Bridge, along the river and through Omotesando. A well-chosen tea makes leaving the temple a second reading of Uji: first its sacred landscape, then the agricultural culture that made the town famous.

Bottom line

Choose Nakamura Tokichi for a matcha dessert, or reserve Taihoan for a cultural introduction to tea ceremony.
