Leaving Grand-Place, choosing a beer may sound simple until the names appear: gueuze, kriek, dubbel, tripel and draught choices that change from bar to bar. Central Brussels lets you compare two ways of drinking without taking transport. One keeps the room of a family café beside the Saint-Hubert Galleries; the other fills an alley with long lists and people seeking a new label. The useful choice begins with the kind of evening you want.
A café with history beside the galleries
À La Mort Subite is at 7 Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagères. The Vossen family says the name came from the last throw of a dice game and that the business moved to this address in 1928. Gueuze and other Belgian beers appear on a menu that also includes cheeses, cold meats and simple dishes. Its appeal is sitting in a room with a traceable history, not collecting labels from an enormous list. It opens Monday to Saturday and closes Sunday; that can decide a short weekend visit.
Many labels in a nearby alley
Delirium Café is at 4 Impasse de la Fidélité. The tourism office points to its enormous beer selection. Delirium Village has several bars, but the recommended Café is downstairs; the other rooms’ menus are not interchangeable. It stays open late into the night and the group does not take ordinary table reservations. Its energy can be welcome for discovering styles and less comfortable for quiet conversation at the busiest times.
How to choose the route and order
From the square, you can pass through the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries and reach À La Mort Subite, or continue by the streets near Rue des Bouchers into Delirium’s alley. Brussels’ tourism guide names both among the centre’s beer cafés. Customer accounts are not a contest: the first draws praise for its classic atmosphere but occasional criticism of service; the second draws praise for range and warnings about noise or crowding. Ask about glass size and alcohol strength before ordering another round. The current menu, your company and the hour matter more than declaring one “best bar”.
For gueuze in a room that carries some of the city’s history, choose À La Mort Subite. For comparing styles and extending the night, Delirium is a better fit. Both lie within walking distance of the monumental centre, though their pace is very different.
À La Mort Subite offers a historic café and gueuze; Delirium brings a much broader beer list and a livelier night.
Options to compare
These options relate to the question. Read each profile and check current details before deciding.
À La Mort Subite stands beside the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries entrance, a short walk from Grand-Place. The business traces its name to a dice game played by Théophile Vossen’s customers around 1910: one final, hurried throw was “la mort subite”. The café moved to 7 Rue Montagne aux Herbes Potagère

Delirium Café is tucked into Impasse de la Fidélité, an alley near Grand-Place. It should not be confused with the Taphouse, Hoppy Loft, Monasterium or other venues within Delirium Village: each room has its own menu and location. The café is downstairs, through the third entrance on the left accord
