Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Tours if you arrive by train and want to walk to the cathedral?

Hôtel du Manoir brings you into the Saint-Gatien district; Hôtel Val de Loire shortens the luggage walk from the station.

Tours station lets you begin a Loire journey without going straight to the châteaux. Saint-Gatien is a walk away, a cathedral with an elaborate Gothic façade and stained glass that the tourism office recommends seeing before exploring the old streets. With a suitcase after a train, there are two ways to organise the first night: stay almost opposite the station or move on to a quieter street in the cathedral district. That choice changes arrival, breakfast and the next morning’s walk.

Hôtel Val de Loire Tours stands at 33 boulevard Heurteloup. Its own site estimates about fifty metres from the station and says the nineteenth-century townhouse has fourteen rooms. The tourism office distinguishes rooms facing the boulevard from those looking into an inner garden; ask which you are booking if noise matters. Guests often praise rail convenience and staff, though some mention stairs, heat or lack of air conditioning. Do not confuse this hotel with a similarly named property in Azay-le-Rideau: booking that one would not put Tours Cathedral within a walk of this station.

Hôtel du Manoir Tours is at 2 rue Traversière, already on the route towards Saint-Gatien. It offers rooms of different sizes, luggage storage and breakfast in a stone-vaulted room. Travellers praise the welcome and cleanliness; others describe differences between rooms facing the street and courtyard. Its site lists a lift but also warns that the property is not accessible for people with reduced mobility. That precise statement is more useful than assuming accessibility merely because there is a lift.

Hours matter at both hotels. Val de Loire receives guests until 21:00 and asks for notice of a later arrival. Du Manoir also closes reception at 21:00 and has a Sunday afternoon break. With a late train, make arrangements before buying a non-refundable rate; do not count on an all-night reception. Check whether breakfast costs extra, the floor of your room and luggage storage if arriving early. For the cathedral visit, Touraine Tourism also points to access to the adjoining Psalette cloister as a separate part of the itinerary.

Val de Loire solves the first half-hour with luggage and leaves a walk to the heritage area. Du Manoir brings the cathedral district into the stay and adds a characterful breakfast room, though its accessibility limit rules it out for some travellers. Neither should be judged by the headline rate alone: the bed, orientation, breakfast and actual train time determine which saves effort and money.

Bottom line

Val de Loire makes arrival from the train quicker; du Manoir places the night in the cathedral district, with breakfast in a vaulted room and accessibility limits.
