A day at Pompeii often begins before entering the park: there is luggage to leave behind, a modern town with almost the same name as the ancient one to navigate, and an entrance to choose. The amphitheatre stands at one end of the archaeological site; Porta Marina, near the Forum, is at the other. That difference matters when the plan is to spend hours walking through Roman streets. Staying in Pompei can make the visit less tiring, but only if the hotel suits your intended gate and train route.
Opposite Piazza Anfiteatro: start without a detour
Hotel del Sole, at Via Plinio 15, faces the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance. From here visitors can begin in the eastern part of the site, with the amphitheatre as an immediate landmark. Officially classified as a four-star hotel, it lists a restaurant, a terrace looking towards the park and parking. Its appeal is not a promise of private archaeological access, but the chance to remove one transfer from the first hour. Travellers whose guided tour begins at Porta Marina should not assume all the entrances are interchangeable.
Town centre and station: a base for travelling onward
Hotel Diana Pompei fits another routine: arrive by train in town, walk to the hotel, rest in its citrus garden and go out to dinner in modern Pompei. Multilingual staff, colourful rooms and a patio make it attractive when the trip does not end as the park closes. Guest comments often praise the service and cleanliness, while a few mention compact rooms or a thinner breakfast selection late in the service. The useful question here is not whether it is “near the ruins”, but which gate and which station each traveller will actually use.
The railway map that can save the morning
The Archaeological Park identifies three entrances: Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra and Piazza Anfiteatro. Its official directions link Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra to the Napoli–Sorrento Circumvesuviana line and Pompei Villa dei Misteri stop. For Piazza Anfiteatro it names the Napoli–Poggiomarino line and Pompei Santuario stop; there is also Trenitalia’s Pompei station. A reservation described as “near Pompeii” therefore does not solve the transfer by itself. Before paying, put the hotel, your actual arrival station, the gate on your ticket and any tour meeting point on the same map.
For a single-night stay and an early start at the amphitheatre, Hotel del Sole offers a clear advantage. Travellers combining the archaeological site with the modern town or other trips around Campania may prefer Hotel Diana’s more urban base. In either case, buy admission to the park through its official channel and check the current opening times; staying nearby does not include entry. The best choice is not the property that looks closest on an aerial photograph, but the one that gets you to the right gate without dragging luggage along.
The best base depends on the gate and train you will use; check both before booking.

Hotel Diana Pompei offers a different base for the night before exploring the ancient city: its appeal lies less in a view of the ruins than in its citrus garden and the everyday life of modern Pompei. At Vicolo Sant’Abbondio 12, it is close to the town’s railway station. The hotel describes brightl
