Maskay guide

Where should you stay near Oslo Central Station to walk to the Opera House and MUNCH?

Two practical hotels by the trains leave more time and money for Bjørvika’s cultural waterfront.

Your train arrives at Oslo Central Station, with the cultural waterfront on the other side. The Opera House rises beside the fjord and MUNCH stands a short walk farther into Bjørvika. Staying nearby keeps two walkable visits from becoming a chain of journeys, but the hotels do not offer identical rest. Citybox Oslo and Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station strip back conventional hotel services in different ways. Comparing room size, breakfast and potential noise is more useful than calling either one 'cheap' without travel dates.

Plan the visit from the station

With luggage, first find the exit nearest your hotel. Fred Olsens gate is almost beside Oslo Central Station; Prinsens gate takes you a few streets farther into the centre. Once settled, return towards the station frontage and head for the Opera House. You can then continue along the Bjørvika waterfront to MUNCH. Check each institution's hours and tickets: being able to walk between the buildings does not mean both can be visited at any hour.

Two ways of paying for services you will use

Comfort Hotel Xpress Central Station makes arrival with heavy cases simple. Its Barception is staffed around the clock and sells breakfast items, which are not included in the general room rate. Some rooms are small, so check their floor area and bed type. Citybox Oslo relies on automatic check-in, a simple guest kitchen and more prominent common areas. Its entry-level rooms are compact too. The difference lies in how you expect to use the hotel after a full day on foot.

The real budget begins with the room chosen

An offer for a small single is not comparable with a standard double, and breakfast bought elsewhere can change the total. Check luggage arrangements, late-night access and room orientation if city noise worries you. Guest accounts help here: they praise the locations of both properties but also describe tight rooms and occasional disturbances. Book with the precise category and conditions in front of you; either address avoids another transport journey to see the Opera House and MUNCH.

Bottom line

Comfort Xpress wins on station access and its staffed reception; Citybox offers self-service accommodation with more common space.
