Where to Stay in Nara for an Early Walk in the Park: By the Station or in a Historic Hotel?

Compare a hotel linked to JR Nara Station with a historic property beside the park, balancing an early start, rail connections and access to Nara’s temples.

The difference between sleeping beside a station and staying at the edge of the park becomes clear at daybreak. Nara Park has no single gate: its open landscape links shrines, temples, gardens and paths where deer roam freely. The park itself is accessible at any hour, although each site keeps its own opening times; an early start lets you walk before groups fill the best-known routes. For that quieter morning, Nara Hotel stands beside the park. For a simpler arrival by train, Hotel Nikko Nara connects directly to the west exit of JR Nara Station.

Nara Hotel is the more characterful historic stay. Opened in 1909, its wooden main building blends Japanese and Western design and was created by architect Kingo Tatsuno, also known for Tokyo Station. The property underwent several months of renovation and the full hotel reopened in September 2026. Kintetsu-Nara is about a 15-minute walk away and JR Nara about 25 minutes; complimentary shuttle buses also run according to a published schedule. This location makes an early walk into the park easy, although the rates and atmosphere belong to an upscale hotel rather than a budget base.

Hotel Nikko Nara solves a different travel problem: arriving with luggage and making onward connections to Osaka or Kyoto. It is directly linked to JR Nara, has 330 guest rooms, a public bath for guests and several restaurants, including a buffet with Japanese and Western dishes. The park is about a 20-minute walk away, with Kōfuku-ji closer. Guests often value the station connection and breakfast, while some describe the rooms as dated or mention train noise depending on the room’s orientation. Kintetsu-Nara is about a 12-minute walk away.

Your choice depends on the first hour you want to spend in Nara. The historic hotel suits travellers who want to step straight towards the trees and continue to Kasuga Taisha or Tōdai-ji; the station hotel is practical for trains, buses and city services. The park covers more than 500 hectares, and its main temples are separated by substantial walks, so an extra night helps divide the visit between heritage, museums and Naramachi. If you plan to enter Nara Hotel only to view its interiors, check its notices: since October 2026, the hotel has restricted access for visitors whose sole purpose is architectural sightseeing.
