Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Mostar: by the Old Bridge or in a modern district?

Two hotels show the difference between sleeping in the historic centre and prioritising modern facilities, a pool and parking.

Mostar is shaped by the Neretva and by a bridge that serves as crossing, viewpoint and symbol. The original Stari Most, built in the Ottoman period, was destroyed during the 1993 war and rebuilt using traditional techniques and materials; in 2005 UNESCO inscribed the Old Bridge area and old town for the coexistence of architectural and cultural influences. Choosing a hotel here is therefore about more than counting metres: staying among the stone lanes makes it possible to see the historic centre before and after day trips, while a modern base may suit families, drivers or stays with several practical needs.

Hotel Almira is about thirty metres from the bridge, in the pedestrian heart of the visit. The property describes itself as family-run and combines rooms, a restaurant, breakfast and excursions to destinations in Herzegovina. Some rooms advertise balconies or views; not all have the same outlook, so ask about the exact room. Guests often value the location, welcome and option of nearby parking, although some describe rooms as simple or note differences between views. In a historic centre, it is also sensible to confirm stairs, luggage arrangements and parking terms before arrival.

Hotel Mepas represents another side of Mostar: it stands above the shopping centre of the same name in the business district, with an indoor pool, gym, saunas, spa, restaurants and parking. Its address is practical for anyone combining sightseeing with shopping, a road trip or a family stay where several services under one roof are useful. The Old Bridge is about a ten-minute walk away according to the hotel, not outside the lobby. Guest comments often praise the room size, pool, cleanliness and breakfast; others question the cost of some services or the food selection, so check what the rate includes.

The difference becomes clear on the walk. From Almira, Kujundžiluk bazaar, mosques and both banks of the bridge fit into daily life on foot; cobbles and visitor crowds can make luggage less convenient. From Mepas, the walk to the old town is direct, but the hotel setting is more contemporary and downtime centres on indoor facilities. In summer heat, with children or after a late visit, the pool and indoor mall connection may matter more than waking by the river. If the priority is photographing the bridge early or dining nearby, the balance shifts the other way.

Before booking, compare official star categories with guest ratings as separate measures, and confirm breakfast, parking, views, accessibility and cancellation terms. Mostar’s history is more than a postcard: Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian traces meet contemporary reconstruction and everyday life on both riverbanks. Almira brings that city to the doorstep; Mepas makes a facilities-led stay easier. The better base depends on whether you want the bridge as a neighbour or prefer the hotel’s services to organise the day.

Bottom line

Almira puts the Old Bridge a few steps away for exploring the historic centre; Mepas offers a pool, spa, parking and retail services in a more modern district.
