Stepping off a train at Montpellier Saint-Roch and reaching the historic centre almost at once changes the pace of a short stay. Place de la Comédie, with its opera house and Three Graces fountain, opens the way into the Écusson; medieval lanes, tram stops and neighbourhood squares lie around it. Choosing a hotel here is less about chasing a famous view than deciding how far to carry luggage and what kind of room is actually needed.
The most direct line from platform to square
Rue de Maguelone links Saint-Roch with the Comédie. Royal Hôtel Montpellier stands on it in a nineteenth-century building that the hotel says it renovated in 2021. Its website places the station about 100–150 metres away. The official three-star classification describes a hotel category; the guest score shown on the listing measures something different. Air-conditioned, double-glazed rooms, breakfast and tea for guests give an outline of the stay.
The advantage is practical: arrive, check in and head back towards the square with little need for a map. Comfort still varies by room; some accounts suggest checking the exact category. For a trip with an early train departure, proximity to Saint-Roch may matter more than a small difference in room rate.
A smaller hotel beside a medieval tower
Hôtel des Arts Comédie Montpellier faces Tour de la Babote, a remnant of the city's defences. With twenty rooms and an official two-star classification, it presents itself as an independent hotel. Its website lists rooms in several sizes, breakfast and parking by reservation. It is not interchangeable with the Royal: part of the appeal is the character of a small property on the edge of the old town.
Guest accounts show both the strength and the limit of that formula. Some praise the personal welcome, beds and walkable centre; others report small bathrooms or older furniture. For a family or a visitor with limited mobility, the decisive detail is not the average score but the size and conditions of the room booked. Asking for that information before paying helps avoid a surprise on arrival.
Choose the right station, then take a first walk
Montpellier Saint-Roch and Montpellier Sud de France are different stations. The latter is not beside these hotels, so check the station on your ticket before planning to walk. From Saint-Roch, the Royal offers the shortest route to the Comédie; Des Arts lets visitors start at the Babote and then enter the Écusson. Both make it possible to continue towards the Esplanade or Place Saint-Roch without relying on a car.
Royal Hôtel gives the most direct arrival from Saint-Roch; Hôtel des Arts offers an independent stay by Tour de la Babote. Compare the exact room and arrival station before booking.
