Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Kurokawa Onsen, and how do you get there from Fukuoka?

Fumoto Ryokan and Ryokan Wakaba offer different baths, meals and rooms. Compare the inns and learn how to reach the village by road.

At dusk, Kurokawa Onsen’s wooden inns light their lanterns beside the river as guests in yukata wander its lanes. This is a place to stay, not a stop improvised after stepping off a train: the village has no railway station and the final leg is by road. The first practical decision is arranging the bus; then choose the ryokan where you will spend several hours between bathing, dinner and rest.

Fumoto Ryokan sits in the centre and makes bathing its signature. It has 14 rooms and 17 bathing spaces with natural, continuously flowing hot-spring water, including 11 private baths available without reservation, along with public, outdoor and some in-room options in the annex. Seasonal cooking uses ingredients from Kumamoto and Kyushu. Guest comments often mention the bath variety, attentive service and kaiseki dinners; arriving early is better than squeezing the stay between transfers.

Ryokan Wakaba offers a more intimate atmosphere beside the Tanoharu River. The local association lists nine rooms in the main building and three in the annex. Dinner may be served in the room or in a dining space around an irori hearth; the menu includes wagyu, seasonal produce and Kumamoto basashi. Visitors often value breakfast, service and the indoor and outdoor baths. There is an important mobility consideration: all rooms are reached by stairs and the inn has no lift.

A direct bus from Hakata Station takes about three hours. Routes from Kumamoto combine train and bus and require a final road connection, taxi or pickup arranged with the inn. Check return schedules before connecting to a train or flight. Fumoto suits guests who want to try many baths without leaving the property; Wakaba suits those prioritising a traditional dinner and riverside stay. Confirm meals, dietary needs, transport and accessibility with each inn in advance.
