Where to stay in Santa Cruz de La Palma: three three-star hotels and how to choose

By the sea, in the historic centre or uphill in an apartment: three ways to use the capital as a base.

Where you stay changes how you read the city

Santa Cruz de La Palma is compact, but its accommodation does not offer one single relationship with the city. A room by the sea opens straight onto the avenue and harbour; a small house in the old town puts daily life within walking distance; a higher location offers more space and independence, in exchange for planning the uphill return and local trips. This guide compares three properties Google Maps identifies as three-star hotels, each with a different role for travellers seeking comfort without paying for services they may not use. Instead of chasing a single nightly rate, choose according to whether you arrive by ferry or plane, need a kitchen and expect to spend time in the room.

The seafront as a point of arrival

Hotel Castillete sits facing the Atlantic and follows an aparthotel format. Its website presents studios with sitting areas and sea-view balconies; Google Maps describes a simple property within walking distance of the island museum, Santa Catalina Castle and the ferry terminal. For travellers arriving by boat or wanting the promenade close by, the location cuts down on transfers and lets the day begin with the coast in view. A studio can provide useful independence for a stay of several days. That does not mean living inside the historic lanes: the mood is more maritime, and the equipment in a specific unit should be checked against the booking.

A small base inside the old town

El Hotelito 27 offers a more intimate scale in the historic centre. Google Maps describes it as a bed and breakfast with breakfast and practical services, a short walk from the Atlantic. The advantage is clear for guests who want to explore mostly without a car: squares, shopping streets, restaurants and heritage sit within an easy walk. Bajamar beach is outside the old town and becomes a separate outing, as do routes climbing into the island’s interior. The accommodation format and exact room matter: before booking, compare the room type against your trip and confirm parking if you are arriving by car.

More space, with an uphill return to plan

Aparthotel El Galeón occupies a higher position and offers apartments with equipped kitchens and shared living areas. The hotel website adds a breakfast buffet for guests, a solarium and private parking subject to availability. That combination may suit families and longer stays, when preparing some meals in the apartment can change both budget and timing. The trade-off is a quieter setting rather than a direct step onto the pedestrian seafront: the return includes a slope, and drivers should confirm the recommended access. For an island trip by car, parking and a kitchen may matter more than sleeping in the middle of the old town; without a car, the daily route deserves more thought.

The right base depends on your trip

Castillete prioritises the ocean and port; El Hotelito 27 makes walking around the historic city easy; El Galeón offers apartment independence in a calmer area. Google Maps lists all three as three-star accommodation, but their experiences differ. Aena lists a bus connection between the airport, Santa Cruz and Los Cancajos, while the ferry route links the island capital with Los Cristianos in Tenerife; check dates and schedules before travelling. Compare the room, breakfast, parking and arrival arrangements directly with each property. That makes the choice about the trip you want to take, rather than only the lead photo in a search result.
