Where should you stay in Lucca: inside the walls or by the parking?

Hotel Ilaria places you inside the old town; Hotel Napoleon offers private parking outside the walls. How you arrive and travel will help you choose.

Lucca does not make you choose between one monument and the next: its old town sits inside a ring of Renaissance walls that now serves as a public promenade. The four kilometres of tree-lined paths circle churches, squares and towers, making the hotel part of the itinerary: staying inside means stepping straight into the pedestrian city; sleeping outside can simplify parking and road access. Hotel Ilaria and Hotel Napoleon show two ways of arriving in this Tuscan city.

Hotel Ilaria is inside the walls on Via del Fosso, in a complex that occupies former stables and a fourteenth-century tower. It is a four-star hotel with breakfast, complimentary bicycles, round-the-clock assistance and a terrace with a hot tub. The station is about a ten-minute walk away; you can begin with a cycle along the elevated promenade before heading to the cathedral or Piazza dell’Anfiteatro. Reviews often value the service and breakfast, although room layout and size vary by category.

Hotel Napoleon, also officially four-star, stands on Viale Europa about 700 metres from the walls. It has free private parking, bicycles and a sweet-and-savoury buffet. The advantage is clear if you arrive by car, travel as a family or plan to continue towards Pisa and Florence; the trade-off is a roughly ten-to-fifteen-minute walk to enter the centre. Guest feedback praises the staff and breakfast but also mentions traffic noise and differences between rooms. The hotel recommends requesting a room at the back in advance if quiet matters.

Lucca railway station is just outside the walls beside Piazza Ricasoli; a pedestrian route crosses San Colombano bastion. The historic centre is largely pedestrian, with car parks placed around the outside of the ring. A good visit combines the walls with Via Fillungo, the Cathedral of San Martino and the squares around the former Roman forum. If you arrive by train and expect to walk in and out, Ilaria saves steps; if a car shapes the trip, Napoleon avoids searching for a space where driving is restricted.

Before booking, compare the exact room, whether breakfast is included and the kind of parking access available. Both hotels’ four-star labels are official categories, while reviews describe individual stays and do not replace that classification. For a city break without a car, accommodation within the walls better matches Lucca’s pace; for a Tuscan road trip, sleeping by the main road may be more functional, with the walls still within walking distance.

Bottom line

Ilaria is the choice for waking up inside the walls and exploring Lucca on foot or by bike; Napoleon suits travellers with a car and luggage.
