Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Kamakura: by the station or beside the sea?

Your hotel choice changes the pace of Kamakura: the centre makes it easier to walk between the station, shrine and shops, while Shichirigahama brings the sea into the morning. Compare access, facilities, feedback and the implications for visiting Hase and the Great Buddha.

Kamakura is easier to plan when your base matches the kind of day you have in mind. The centre, around JR Kamakura and Komachi, makes early visits to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, shopping streets and trains to Hase straightforward. Shichirigahama on the coast, by contrast, lets you begin or end with the horizon over Sagami Bay. The difference is not only visual: it affects how often you move your luggage, how late you can return and how many connections you need to plan.

Hotel Metropolitan Kamakura is a two-minute walk from the station’s east exit, along Wakamiya Oji. It has 138 rooms, a Café&Meal MUJI restaurant and a MUJI com shop; the hotel lists check-in from 3 pm and check-out by 11 am. This location makes it simple to combine temples and shops and is practical when arriving from Tokyo by JR. The restaurant’s breakfast buffet includes Japanese and Western choices with local ingredients, although you should check whether your accommodation plan includes it.

Kamakura Prince Hotel sits on a hillside above Shichirigahama and has 97 ocean-facing rooms; rooms on the third and fourth floors may look toward Enoshima and Fuji on clear days. It has French and Japanese restaurants and a lounge. The uphill walk from the station takes about eight minutes; a free shuttle takes around five. Hase-dera and the Great Buddha are several kilometres away, so Enoden trains or buses become part of the day’s plan.

Feedback for Hotel Metropolitan tends to value cleanliness, location and service, although some guests find certain rooms compact. At Kamakura Prince, the views and quiet receive praise; other comments mention rooms in need of renewal, odours or maintenance. If the priority is visiting many temples early, the central hotel cuts transfers. If you want quiet evenings beside the water, the coastal property supplies that setting, but check the room category, the hill and the day’s transport arrangements carefully.

A practical route can start early in town: the station, Wakamiya Oji and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu; then take Enoden to Hase and the Great Buddha, whose casting began around 1252, and finish with a walk by the coast. From a Shichirigahama base, reverse the order and make the seaside walk the closing chapter. Compare the total cost, cancellation terms and how much time you expect to spend in the room enjoying the view. There is no single best area: choose the one that saves travel time or makes the sea part of your stay.
