Where to stay when arriving by train in Gothenburg: Hôtel Eggers or Hotel Royal?

Two historic hotels stand within minutes of Gothenburg Central Station. We compare their character, breakfast, rooms, guest feedback and advantages for exploring on foot.

Gothenburg welcomes travellers at a station that opens almost directly onto the city centre: trams cross the squares, canals are a few blocks away and Trädgårdsföreningen park offers an early green pause. If luggage is heavy or you arrive late, staying near Göteborg Centralstation saves transfers; if you plan to walk towards markets, shops and cafés, the street outside the hotel matters too. Hôtel Eggers and Hotel Royal both combine history with a central address, although their everyday feel differs.

Hôtel Eggers is on Drottningtorget, opposite the station. It has operated in a listed building since 1859 and offers around 70 rooms, a restaurant, a historic bar and a terrace. The breakfast buffet and nearby trams appeal to travellers combining rail journeys with city visits; guests mention the architecture and service, along with tram or square noise in some rooms. A courtyard-facing room may suit light sleepers.

Hotel Royal, at 67 Drottninggatan, is about a five-minute walk from the station. It is a family-run property opened in 1852, with 76 rooms, an included buffet breakfast and afternoon coffee and cake. Guests appreciate the service, cleanliness and chance to pause in the lounge; they also note that economy rooms can be compact and that not everyone finds the breakfast selection extensive. The building retains its wrought-iron staircase and painted glass ceiling.

The choice depends on how you plan each day. From Eggers, the 19th-century park is almost next door and the tram hub makes it easy to head for the harbour, Haga or Liseberg. From Royal, pedestrian streets lead within minutes to the Saluhallen food hall and shopping centre; both hotels work well for walking, but neither removes the need for transport to every neighbourhood. Hotel Royal has a 24-hour reception and publishes breakfast hours by day; Eggers advertises a buffet and asks guests to check service details when booking.

The listings consulted show strong ratings, but these are Google Hotels scores rather than hotel classifications: Eggers had 4.3/5 from 1,930 reviews and Royal 4.7/5 from 1,169. Eggers is officially listed as four-star; we could not confirm an equivalent classification for Royal and do not assign one. If the priority is stepping off the train and dropping your bags immediately, Eggers saves a few steps; for a smaller, family-run stay, Royal balances centrality and quiet. Compare room type and breakfast terms before booking.

Bottom line

Eggers wins for immediate rail access and its restaurant-led hotel atmosphere; Royal offers a family-run scale, afternoon coffee and a quieter pedestrian street. The specific room and noise level may matter more than a few minutes’ difference.
