Where to stay in Gdańsk: by the marina or in the historic centre?

Hotel Gdańsk Boutique faces the Motława and has a spa and microbrewery; Hotel Artus sits among the Main Town’s pedestrian streets. We compare location, facilities, rooms and guest feedback.

In Gdańsk, the Motława is more than a backdrop: it was a trading route for centuries and still shapes the walk between the port crane, old water gates and the Main Town’s façades. Staying by the river means starting the day beside the marina and returning to a property with several facilities; sleeping on an inner street puts churches, cafés and squares right outside. Hotel Gdańsk Boutique and Hotel Artus represent these two rhythms a short distance from the main historic sights.

Hotel Gdańsk Boutique occupies the restored former granary at 9 Szafarnia, opposite the Żuraw crane. Its two wings have different classifications—five stars in Granary and four in Yachting—and the offer includes rooms and suites, a restaurant, Brovarnia, spa, saunas and a gym. Guests often praise the waterside location, breakfast and service; some would like a pool or jacuzzi and note differences between room categories. The hotel says the station is less than a half-hour walk along Długa.

Hotel Artus is at 36/39 Piwna, within the historic centre’s pedestrian network. It is a three-star hotel with rooms and apartments, Mon Balzac restaurant and an advertised sauna. Travellers appreciate walking to St Mary’s and Neptune’s Fountain, along with helpful staff and breakfast; criticism mentions small or awkwardly arranged rooms and bar noise on some nights. For guests who want to return to their room between visits, the position may matter more than a large spa.

Both hotels make it easy to connect the Royal Route, St Mary’s Basilica and Długie Pobrzeże waterfront, but their immediate surroundings feel different. From the marina, you cross towards Długa and the quays; from Artus, cobbled streets and façades sit below the windows. Rail arrival also differs: the riverside hotel recommends a taxi or a walk along the Royal Route with light luggage; from Artus, a taxi may be easier if you have a large suitcase because of the pedestrian streets.

Google Hotels showed 4.6/5 from 1,553 reviews for Hotel Gdańsk Boutique and 4.4/5 from 947 for Artus; these are guest scores, not hotel classifications. Check the specific room: Granary and Yachting differ in style and star category, and Artus room sizes vary. For facilities and a waterside stay, the first is more comprehensive; for landmark access and a central address, the second is more practical. Check breakfast, parking and spa access in your booking terms.

Bottom line

Choose Hotel Gdańsk Boutique for the marina, restaurant and spa in one complex; Artus puts landmarks outside the door and shortens daily walks. With either, confirm which wing or room type you are booking.
